I post yesterday in another thread, that my sons 88 Fiero GT dies when shifted into "Drive" (I typed "Park" earlier in error). A couple of members sent me links to repair the TCC Lockup Solenid and Pressure switch.

Well today I talked to my mechanic and told him about the lockup solenoid and pressure switch and he told me that if the transmission wasn't going into lockup mode, in his experience with the older pontiac transmissions it's probably the Torque Converter.

Does this sound right? I've never heard of a torque converter going bad on a 47k transmission. Thank you.

Oops, I meant to say, "engine dies when shifted into Drive". Sorry for the mistake. I'll edit the original thread.

Thanks, everyone.

My mechanic confirmed it was the TCC Lockup Solenoid. He thought the transmiision had to come out to change it but, I told him it could be changed by removing the rear wheel and transmission side cover.

Yup, I changed mine because it wasn't locking at all... and it failed again two years later. I was able to do it myself in the garage with a jack stand and the wheel off. I tilted it way up on the drivers side to limit the mess... it was still a mess.

Thanks, jetman!

I wish I read your links before I took my son's Fiero to the mechanic.
