I ran into this on GM's powertrain site, and it looks cool.

The oil fill, mounts, and light weight, 6300 RPM cutoff, VVT, good HP numbers, and good starter location made me wonder..

It's an inline 5, narrower than the V's.

I believe that is the inline 5 used in the Colorado trucks? If it is, they are pigs! Poor fuel economy and poor power - at least in the truck.

I've worked on a few on these engines, they seem to be pretty stout and the owners of the trucks do like them (gas mileage is a little less than expected) but I think it might be the length that would be the biggest issue.

if they are int he trucks, they probably share the LS# bolt pattern.

I mean, even if the 5 cyl is too long, the 4-cyl version is 2.9l, and puts out 185 HP, while revving high, and having a flat torque curve. Also, the accessories are in the "right" spot for the fiero, it was originally a RWD motor so the mounts would be easier, the starter is already in the perfect spot, the exhaust and intake are in the right spot, and they make bolt-on upgrades for the sport truck market. This is really tempting, especially since they already came with manual transmissions, I could conceivably use the entire computer in stock form with ETC. Does anybody have a canyon/colorado with the 4-banger? can you snap a pic of the passenger side to see if there's clearance for the axle?

Adapter plate required....makes it fairly useless as a "budget" swap.
