swapping in a 3.8.
need to know what kind of fuel pump to use? i have the 4cly pump in the tank.
i was talking to my friend and he said just to get an inline pump so i dont have to take the tank out. just hook it up to the fuel lines and wire it up to the pump wires.
will it work?

It will work ..Use an Alfa 75 fuel pump and just run a line between the pickup and the original Fiero fuel pump

There are many discussions on in-line fuel pumps.

The 2.8with fuel injection uses a high pressure pump 47psi plus while the duke 4 cylinder uses a low pressure tbi unit at 4-8psi .

fuel pressure is set by the regulator, not the pump.

Yes, but fuel flow rates are set by the pump. The duke pump is designed to operate at 12psi (9-13 range). The V6 pump runs at 43-45ish (engine off, no vacuum on the regulator).

You could fairly easily add an inline pump. The duke pump would act as a "pre-pump" like the old Volvo 240's had. Although dropping the tank is not very hard. It will probably cost less and give you less grief if you go with an OEM style pump in the tank. I used the same pump as the mid-90's V8 Corvette and it works great. (3.4L turbo with 30lbs injectors at 15psi boost)

I'd be afraid of my whole system depending on an old, worn out pump in the tank. I think you should drop the tank and put a new pump in it.

i might as well just drop the tank. you never know what could be inside it (dirt and grime)
The V6 fiero pump will do just fine correct?
same size pump just different flow rate?
and same wiring so no need to modify anything? direct replacement?

Drop the tank and clean the dirty mess inside!!
BUT get a vette pump to go in. direct fit. better than stock V6 pump! stock pump will not be enough.
Don't get me wrong...it will work, but a better pump is going to be the better investment!!
Droping the tank is not hard at all, but doing it over and over is a pain in the rear..

well the tank is fully empty. i hotwired the pump to a 12V source and pumped out all the fuel so i can fuel up my other car :P
so it should be fairly light

X3 for the vette pump. I used one for a 94 LT1 Vette, rockauto has em for about $100. They are the exact same size as the stock pump, so replacement is easy.
