It depends on whether you're using the big filter or the little filter. The original recommended oil filter was kind of small, then GM changed the recommendation to a bigger filter. Regardless of what year you have, look up the filter for an 88. Most cross reference books and touch pad store devices will give you the big filter this way.

Actually 4.5 qt with the large filter. 5 is overfilled. even with the almost quart size filter on my relocation it only takes 5 and that filter is 2x the size of the larger stock one, plus 8' of hose for the supply and return.

Maybe download an Owners or Service Manual for your car for those "quick questions". It would save you the trouble of dropping everything, coming in the house, firing up the computer, logging on to post your question and waiting for an answer.

I would agree with that in most cases, but the manual does not seem to be too accurate in this case:
quote
"Approximate capacity with or without oil filter change."
That scares me that some tech thinks that if you change the filter or not, it takes the same amount of oil! Secondly, with my Vin I would be a 1/2 quart low according to what people have posted in this thread.

"Recheck oil level after refill."
IF a so-called "tech" doesn't know he should be doing this and just blindly dumps in 4 quarts and sends the car on its way - he shouldn't be working as a car mechanic.

Thanks for the new info, I requested the info so I would know how much to purchase. I called JimmyS while I was on the way to the store, he gave me the 4 &1/2 info w/filter answer.
Thank you for suggesting the downloads, I've saved the path
I do have the shop manuals & owners manual packed away, would have taken longer to find the box than post a quickie. (and there ain't nothing better than a quickie !!)
I'm glad we can rely on the wealth of information of our fellow members. Glad I checked before I started the project.
Now, about that quickie, HEY HONEY, got a minute ? ...
