I have been running my race trim PCM in the car for quite some time. I just set up a new PCM and forgot about the RPM limiter. WOW. The car will pull a lot more Rs than the OE rev limiter will allow. I have to shift Way sooner than I have been with the race PCM.

Ryan If I would have run this stock 99 STS VIN 9 program in my car before any thing else. I would have seen what you were talking about. OMG torque management that just about kills the car at WOT shifts and it slides into gear. First it backs down the timing or shuts down some cylinders. Then it starts a long shift. This is not at the same time rather one after the other. This stock programs sucks in a Fiero and I can see how a Fiero guy would be unhappy.

Ryan and Will I have been working hard on Tunes for Northstars. I have lost more 96 to 99 PCM's than I could have ever imagined. The thing is I am working on 00 to 03 programs. I am using a new download protocol that the older PCM do not like. It may work 10 times and then poof. Any way. Check out these numbers. 02 DTS This is a PM from a customer. I thought I would put the DTS on the dyno before I got my Corsa cat-back on. My car is stock with the exception of a K&N air filter (on sale at farm and fleet $36 bucks!) they put my car on their Mustang Dyno and here are some numbers - I'll scan the sheets soon but here is what we came up with:
Top Speed: 154
0 - 60: 6.28 (twice in 3rd - got better times when not in drive...)
1/4 mile: 14.53211 @ 93.80144 mph
wieght entered was 4000lbs.
We had a hard time with cooling the engine and getting the intake temp down. He said we could've had better #'s if we ran cooler, but I didn't want to stand around for 1 or 2 hours. He had a huge fan out in front of it too.
All thank to Ryan.

I swapped in a set of 3.71 gears. I spent less than 1 hour to do it. Bad thing is it messed the car up bad. (Hits the rev limiter about 10 times before it will shift) Good thing is that I have the technology to fix it. New program for the PCM. If I have any time to do it with all the others that I am doing. I have 4 PCM's to get out this week end.

The Tech II read 11.54 0 to 101 mph on that run. I also backed out of the throttle at one point. My test road has a bump. It was about the same place it shifted into 3rd with the other gear set. At WOT on a shift into 3rd and hitting the bump I would get tire spin. This was at 95 to 100 mph. I have been backing out of the throttle going over the bump. I think I can hold it WFO over the bump now. I would get some unwanted torque managment if the wheels break loose at 100 mph. I like that type of torque managment. The car is getting to be fun again.

AJxtcman, Could you help me with programming for an 98 Northstar to run with a manual transmission? I also have a 95 ECM and harness, I could go that way too. I am just looking to turn off everything except engine controls and emission controls.

I am still on hold on the 93 to 95 Memcal. I have never seen a GM dealership without a RS232 card for the Tech I or a Tech I - A. The Tech I - A equals Tech I with a built in RS232 card. Now I am waiting on a new tool.

How hard was it to swap in the 3.71? Did you do it in the car? I need to do the same thing but the whole transaxle thing is a little different then what i am used to. What all did you have to replace? I just don't really know what to to buy.

Totty take a look at this thread. It has some information. Every time I do a swap I forget to take more pictures to add.
I gave FieroWannaBe a test drive the other day. The car used to shift into 3rd about 100. I mentioned that we were cooking along pretty well getting it into 4th from a stop at WOT. Then I realise the gear ratio error. I guess I hit 3rd about 85 mph now and 4th about 140 mph on the test drive. It was cold -6° and I had no heat. 140 in -6° weather. Hmmmm wanna go for a test drive with me?
I fixed the heat yesterday. The Car was a non A/C and when I got it the guy had added A/C, but the hoses were wrong.
I was running the new gear set through the calculator and this is what I came up with. I swapped out the 3.11 gears for some 3.71
This is the new gear ratio and the trans shift up to 7000, but I would say some place between 6400 and 6700. We ran it to the end of 3rd gear. Going into 3rd is now is 82 to 90 mph and into 4th 134 to 146 mph.
That pic reminds me when I went hunting in my fiero. I just did not have a choice. The samurai diesel was in another city. Nancy had the suburban and it was the last day. So, I chained up my fiero on the rear and took the 87 GT hunting. I drove up the logging road and parked. Bushwacked up to my favorite place and it snowed the entire time I was up in the basin. Came down and found my fiero under 13 inches of snow. I barely, and I mean barely got out and home. I kept high centering on the snow simply by driving the car and compacting the snow. it was wacko. Lesson: don't let your judgement be swayed by desire. Never use a fiero to hunt in out in the woods! LOL!
Now your car is under some real snow. And its cold where you are too!

As you can see I got the car out of the snow bank.
I missed the guy at the dyno shop. I was working on the car and did not call him until 4:30. No one answered the phone. I will try him in the morning. After I get the car in the Dyno I will start in on the blower.
