I googled, and searched the site but had a hard time finding anything relevant. I believe the cables I have are FieroStore cables. I have a problem engaging the lower gears. If they do go in, they usually pop out because it's not fully engaged. Rarely it'll go in and stay in. So how does one go about adjusting them to the correct length? Yes I'm aware I could just wing it, but is there a proper method to doing it?

It depends on what trans you have, but I have uploaded the section from the 86 service manual on trans adjustment on FieroWiki.com under downloads

the shifter has 2 alignment holes in it to hole it in the netural position use a nail or something in the holes and set the adjustments at the trans.
to netural as well. pull the pins and done.

For the 4 speed used on the V6,, this procedure is listed in the newer haynes manual
1 remove console & shift trimplate.. clean out dirt,, lube shift mechanism
2 select 1st gear
3 loosen the shift and select cable nuts at the transmission
4 now in the cab driver seat pull left and up firmly into first gear,,,insert nail or drill into appropiate holes
5 at the transmission levers ,, the verticle select lever is pulled in the direction of the cabin as far as it will move ..now tighten the 2 nuts..
6 try it out ,,before you reinstall the shift plate..

the drill bits/nails you use should be a snug fit..

If you remove any clips to lube shafts ect ,, have a rag laying be neath in case you drop..have magnetic pickup tool

use care when loosen transmission cable/lever nuts they have a habit of comming loose..

look for the alignment holes on the shifter stick at the forward lower center portion of the shifter,, easy to see from driver seat..
the other hole is just to the passenger side of the backup light swtch,,just look down to the right of the switch push lever ,,you will see the hole..your alignment tool will drop in
alignment hole is 5/32
the later red version of haynes has adescription plus some drawings

Why is it I cannot understand how to do this lol, I need to adjust my cable I think, since the other day I put it in first it was hard to go in finally kinda sloppy locked in but then it popped out of first and it seems 1, 3, 5 are all sloppy and dont "lock" in very well, 2, 4, R all make a nice locking feel, is there any way to explain this or where the adjusting holes and what not are? mines a Getrag 5spd Formula

Download the Haynes Manual on this page

http://www.fieronews.net/fu...wnloads.php?cat_id=1

Then go to section Chapter 7A - Section 5 Transaxle Shift Cable Adjustment on page 151.
