I have an 84 Fiero that needs a new coolant temperature sensor. The one I bought locally has a different connector. The Fiero Store sells one that seems to come with a new pigtail, so is that what we do now? Update the connector to match the sensor? My current sensor has a big white connector.

Make sure you are looking at the correct one, there are three. One for the fan switch, one for the gauge, and on for the ECM. You should be able to take it into a local parts store and match it up.

As I understand it, the sensor on the front of the engine (by the firewall) is for the radiator fan (so it's actually a switch), the one on top of the head is for the gauge/idiot light, and the one in the thermostat housing is for the ECM. I'll stea... er, "borrow", a few images I found at PFF:

This is what the sensor I bought looks like (the one marked "computer"):

But my actual sensor looks like the one shown here (circled in red):

I'm just assuming that the 84 used a sensor plug that's no longer made, and the newer style is used on later Fieros. The sensor is probably the same, just the plug is different. I was just wondering if anyone could confirm this.

This thread is old, but bump. I had a similar problem. I bought new temperature sensors, and some weren't correct. Disorganized as I was, I ignored them and left the old sensors in. Have we solved this problem? Now I believe I'm having temp sensor issues. Ideas?

The original coolant temp sensors (for the computer, in the thermostat housing) do have a different connector than the modern replacement.
