Hi Guys!
Just thought I would fill you in on how to get an engine from LKQ, if they only do wholesale in your state and you don't own a business.
First, go to the LKQ site. Find some engines you like. The prices you see are WHOLESALE, NOT YOUR PRICE. Next, go to Advanced Auto. Have them order it. The store manager will know how to order these, but the regular staff do not typically have a clue what you are talking about.
The good:
1. Lots of 3800s for decent price with low mileage. All engines are checked to make sure they run well.
2. Engine gets delivered to Advanced.
3. Eventually all LKQs will sell to the public, they tell me.
The bad:
1. NO WARRANTY unless you can provide a VIN that is the same model as vehicle you are putting in to. I think that is crappy!!!
2. Advance tacks on a surcharge. Seems like it is about $100. The prices are pretty good, though you may do better if you know the salvage world better than I do.
3. Engines are constantly being sold. Thus, the exact engine you want may not be available when you get to Advanced.
Best approach:
Be nice to ordering people at Advanced. Go in EARLY when it is not busy. There does not seem to be any logic to LKQ's pricing. I went in looking for a 3800 with 14k on it. This engine was gone. I was a bit peeved, but I thought I would make the best of it. I then nicely asked the woman at LKQ to find the lowest mileage 3800 she had. She found a 3800 out of a 2007 Lucerne that had 2k on it! Woo hoo! $598.
Hope this helps someone else.
