Most likely worn out bushings in the steering rack

Check for up down movement in the rack ends

Bushings can be fairly easily replaced

If no up down movement then check brake calipers, and then front end suspension

It can be any number of things. I had a bad rattle on my GT that turned out to be a lower control arm bolt that had egged out the bolt hole in the crossmember.
Good luck tracking it down.

This is a loose rack bushing, passenger side. This was causing my 'Clunking' sound.

are there any other ride problems? shaking on freeway?
there are a few things which can come loose: shocks, sway bar, brake pads, brake calipers, even the jack under the hood.

Take the steering linkage and try to move it vertically where it goes into the rack. Also have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth while you watch the linkage. Any vertical movement at the rack will cause noise
