ok umm i nvr said i was using a fwd northstar i was going with a rear wheel and converting to coil pack instead of coil on plug
this is the first ive heard of the newer ecm for north stars being hacked does that mean i can use my 5 spd and get rid of the crap in the ecm my car dosnt if not i can still use his program to run the rwd north star with dis box instead of coil on plug. this isnt my first engine swap in a car i have been a mechanic for a long time. but thank you will for the info will if i had been using a fwd it would have been very helpful sorry i didnt specify earlier that i was using rwd. i also have alot of buddies that can fab new mounts for me so no problems there either

Are you trying to refute what I said or agree with me? The primary reason for switching to the LS1 PCM is for the '96-'99 engines for which the PCM is basically NOT hacked. The '00-'04 Northstar PCM is partially hacked and the LS1 computer isn't applicable to that engine anyway.
I have an XDF for the LS1 PCM also

This is a GM factory setup. It is not something I came up with or have morphed into a old PCM.

ok so i guess here is my new question will the ls1 pcm work on the rwd north star with coil on plug or changing to dis. can you reprogram the newer pcm/ecm for the rwd north star to get rid of all the crap i dont need.

i know what a series 1 is they are awesome cars that wasnt the question i dont mean to be a prick or anything but if im going to spend money on something im going to want to make sure it will work for what i need if not i can look into having the new N* pcm hacked to get rid of what i dont need but id prefer the tuning ability of the ls1 pcm
ahh that was for will sorry about that. i say we ignore will for a moment since he isnt a potential customer since and is trying to stear ones away, sorry will nothing personal but we are trying to discuss business.

96 to 99 use 1 type 00 to 03 uses another 04 & 05 uses another 06 on up uses another
the only PCM's that can be swapped between engines is the 00 to 03 and the 04/05 and that would take some work, but atleast the Blocks and the Cranks are the same.

I don't work for these guys and I'm not offering a competing product.
Just remember that the RWD Northstar has variable cam phasing on all four cams. Each cam has its own independent feedback loop. This is a serious consideration for engine management. The code flat doesn't exist for the earlier PCM's to run the RWD engines.

Lets use my AJ programmed LS1 Shelby set-up as a case history for those that may think its a dubious engine controller for the N*
As you may know from another thread, I have some clutch interfearance issues that I'm trying to figure out. I pulled the motor and cradle to inspect. I replaced the new throwout bearing with another one, fine-tuned the fork and replaced the pressure plate bolts with shouldered fiero bolts instead of SPECS hex caps. I also decided that while it was out of the car that I would reseal the crankcase halfs, oil distribution plate and oil pan. So, I did that and its not running at the moment and still out of the car.
When I get it back in and all hooked up, I'll get the chance to see if everything runs right and is drivable. I hope to get it back together toward the end of next week.
Perhaps using my Fiero as a Guinea Pig will help some decide if its something they want to invest in.
I think the real strength in using this particular LS1 computer is that it was engineered by GM for a manual tranny 4.0 litre Aurora engine...and its able to be modified by tuners. There are suppliers already tuning it such as Westers up in Canada and AJ here in the States. GM dollars going into a program managing a 4.0 on a manual tranny ought to be a very good platform to work from for us Fiero 4.6 N* owners.

I got a hold of the 2002 wiring diagrams for my Northstar 02 Deville. I also was comparing them to a 02 camaro ls1 wiring diagram. The cadillac has an A and C range output from the trans to the PCM and the ls1 camaro has A,B and C range from the trans to the PCM. How did you solve this?
Also One trans has both a Torque converter lock up solinoid and a pulse width modulated TC lockup solinoid While the other trans( I think the cadillac trans axle) has only the one pulse width modulated solinoid. Why did they go to the Pulse width modulated setup ? The older trans I have worked with were just fed straight DC power to turn on the TC lock up solinoid. How did you solve this?
For the crank and cam sensors are they both 24 pulse on the Ls1 and on the 02 Northstar. Please Elaborate on this for me
Thanks Scott

Hi AJ, You seem to have a pretty good background with these Northstar engines. I am curious if the 3-letter code on the labels mean anything? The new Shelby L-47 I bought has KHC on the label and I was wondering if that is the designator for a stock 1999 L-47 or is there anything GM did to improve the engine before sending them out to Shelby? Thanks for any knowledge you can offer.

All the engines were shipped tp the Shelby plant unmodified. the cams were shipped seperate. From my understanding not all the engines that were sold for $250 at the auction were updated. You would need to pull a valve cover and check the cam numbers.

I did just that but I have no idea what they meant. I did a google search and ran into some long posts you made on the caddy forum concerning cam specs but I did not see the numbers mentioned, just years and models along with the appropriate specs that went with them. Now that it has been a couple of days since I did that I will have to find the numbers again... Thanks for your reply.
Charlie
EDIT: I found the number and it was from the forward intake cam (the one with the water pump drive pulley.) 1647435 I don't know if that is the number needed to make a determination or not. The lobes on the cam where slightly larger than the stock L-47 but I only measured the largest point. The S1 cam was only about 3.5 thousandths larger. I am curious if these are L37 cams compared to LD8 cams?

Thank you, just using the lift numbers that is very close to the difference I saw on the two engines. The cams appear to have been installed so now I just need to get it on the road and see how it does.

Funny I found this thread while seeing what has been done to swap an OBDI GT to OBDII and wondering if the 0411 was up to it and here you are!
This is playtoy_18 of monodax and pacific.
Planning to get one of these for commuting, and while I don't plan anything crazy for it it would be nice to be able to tune it or at least diagnose it better/easier.
Nice to see a familiar face,i've only been around here a week or so.

I have been having some engine stalling issues on this setup! Not just the ones I tuned, but even the one Wester's did for a mutual customer.
The program is for a manual trans and most of the have been for automatics with a separate controller. I can't remember mine stalling, but it has been a year and a half since I have really driven the car. Mailing the PCM back and forth with very poor data-logs has been part of the propblem. I am down in South Carolina now and one of the guys lives down here. He has a Turbo Northstar in a Mazda Pickup. We relocated the MAF and all of a sudden the engine started to stall when you let off the gas. This would happen at 40mph. Having the car in hand I could data-log the MAF and the IAC airflow to match them with the settings in the calibration. The stock program was for a 4.0L and all of them so far have been 4.6L. They will flow slightly more at Idle. Well that wasn't the issue anyway. I spent all last week working this issue out.
I have my Fiero now also. It have been in Rock Hill for 1 1/2 years while I was in Wisconsin and I had no test mule to work out bugs.
