AJ, what is the latest state of tune on your LS1 PCM for the N*?

I have several of them out now.

1 of the car has some aftermarket cam and I have an issue with it returning to idle. Other than that they are all ok. I wish I could go out to the location and fix it.


I have one on a twin turbo setup that I am going out to tune soon. It had a single turbo last time I tuned it.

I'll soon be in the market for an engine management system to run my stock '97 VIN Y Northstar on a manual transmission. I understand you may be working in partnership with Wester's Garage, who offers a re-tuned Caddy PCM. In your opinion, which state of tune has been developped the best to run my combination, the LS1 or Caddy PCM?

OK, I have some questions on the PCMs, or atleast the .bin file. I think you sent me one awhile back and I have been holding on to it till now, and I am finally getting ready to build the car for the engine.

So, which year LS1 pcm do I need? What year northstar do I need? and do I wire it like an LS1 just using the northstar sensors?

You use the stock Cadillac harness with all its sensors (only two 02 sensors for bank 1 and bank 2) but pin it to the Shelby Series 1 PCM connector. Its basically an LS1 computer from a 1999 Camaro that you want.

You don't use the stock MAF from the Cadillac. You use a MAF from an LS1 engine for AJ's tune. AJ's set-up is for a 1994-1999 cadillac N* engine.

You will have to wire the fiero clutch switch backwards to work with the PCM if you use the manual tranny.

Use stock cams at this time.

If you run a 4T80E then you want to run the Cadillac PCM and it needs to be tuned by Westers.

If you run a Manual trans or you want to run 4T80E with a PCS controller for the trans then you get to run the LS1 PCM that is supported by TunerCat and JET. Anyone can tune this setup! All you need to do is purchase the JET DST software.
The LS1 PCM is not pined out the same as the Caddy and the harness/PCM connectors will need to be re-pinned

The LS1 PCM runs the LS1 MAF from a GMT800 (Silverado) Truck MAF. This MAF was used on Corvettes also in some years and 2000 to 2005 FWD Northstars.

The Clutch wires need to be connected the way in the schematics for the Shelby

For people willing to get a bit crafty, you could setup a V6 obd2 pcm to sit next to the LS1 pcm and run the transmission, 80e or 65e.

I have seen it done with a the LS1 and the Caddy PCM. I think it was A.J. that had that one.

What is the Clutch Switch wire required for? Is it only to prevent the engine from starting if the clutch is out, or is the signal used by the PCM for anything else?

The clutch pedal position switch is a normally closed switch. The powertrain control module (PCM) applies a voltage (B+) to the clutch pedal position switch circuit. When the clutch pedal position switch is depressed or the clutch pedal is released, the circuit is open and the PCM senses a high voltage. When the clutch pedal position switch is released or the clutch pedal is depressed, the clutch pedal position switch contacts close, causing the applied voltage to go low.

The PCM determines if the clutch pedal position switch has failed by not sensing a clutch switch transition. The PCM monitors vehicle speed from 0 to a predetermined speed.

It has an effect on the way the PCM drives the IAC motor

OK. Here's an update for AJ's LS1 PCM running the Shelby program on my 1996 Northstar with CHRF 272 cams and a manual tranny. The important information to remember is that this is an engine with mild 272 cams:

1) AJ couldn't get my tune with the cams to work (at a distance) with all the PCM's we sent back and forth;
2) I bought a Westers's PCM/tune for the N* thinking it may be AJ's tune. Wester's can't get their tune to work with my cams (PCM #1). I'm sending Westers PCM back for changes and see what happens.
3) I went to a tuning outfit here in Portland with a dyno that tunes Corvettes, Vipers, and all the high end cars using HP Tuners. They have spent approximately 16 hours on the car (I suppose you can guess at the money this has cost me!). They finally have it running OK. BUT it continues to stall at random times and places at operating temp...after 16 hours of tuning.

My suggestion for those wanting to use this PCM is: DONT. DO NOT use the LS1 PCM and the Shelby Program with aftermarket cams. Save your money. The GM program just can't handle it. And...the cost of the 272 cams doesn't justify the extra HP you gain over Stock. The dyno results showed approximately 320HP at the crank and for me a dissapointing 260 at the wheels. A whopping 20 HP over stock VIN 9 motor! The expense just isn't worth it. I realize that its a GM program not dialed in for HP/Torque.

My suggestion is to go the Holley Commander route for the manual transmission and cams. It appears to me that Alan has it dialed in reliably for his cams and this motor. Most likely you will netting more HP too. However, there are those that have not been successful with the Holley as well. Just read Ryan's account: "When I would cruise to a stop, sometimes it would stall." Exact results I am experiencing. Never-the-less, I am strongly considering installing my Holley as I just finished the harness. I also bought Tom's "autotune software" for the Holley 950 to get me started. His program automatically tunes as you drive and makes appropriate adjustments. That should make a safe fuel map for me to start from since I don't have a clue about tuning yet.

In summary, I'm not happy. I'm sure I'll get over it but it has taken way to long, way too much money and renders the car hard to drive. I'm going to look into it more over time.

I still think the N* is a great motor. I'm working on another VIN 9 N* swap with my son and it will be ALL stock with the auto tranny. I will be running a stock 1995 Cadillac PCM with the passkey defeated. Maybe I will have some luck with that approach.

I wouldn't get discouraged because Westers couldn't tune either. I've delt with him/them. Huge rip off. I paid $300 and he didn't change anything. I took it to a local shop who compared stock tune with his tune, there was no difference. I have delt with Darth and will again. Good price and service.

The built short block exceeded my wildest expectations. +45 HP and +20 ftlbs peak with +45 ftlbs at 5800 RPM. It's a monster.

For the run above, the car had the same modded OBDI Caddy computer I've always used.

I have one of the LS1/Shelby PCM's put together by Darth/Sinister, along with connector pigtails, but I haven't converted to it yet. Judging by the AFR graph on the chart, I should do that pretty soon

AJ, I suppose your right. Had no money at the time. And now I'm back at the same position after all this tuning around. Your welcome to look at the changes they made to the program and spend the night here in your homeland.

Will, Impressive results compared to my shelby program set up by AJ and modified by the dyno tuner here in Portland. This tune must be very conservatively tuned. So, are you running a modified 95 PCM? It will be interesting to see your LS1 results and compare them to mine.

I've come to understand is that no one can do a tuning package accurately without the car in front of them. You have to have it tuned by someone local that can see what your engine is doing. To be fair to Westers, the car should be 1500 miles north of here connected to a computer. His customer service has been great by the way.

Almost exactly the same numbers my totally stock engine put down back in 2003... You're up on my by about 5 foot pounds peak... peak power & torque fall off after peak are almost exactly the same as my original Northstar dyno.

I'll be trying the Shelby setup soon.
I'm deciding if I want to build harness adapters so that I can swap back to my current PCM while I hammer the bugs out or if I should just go for it and do the full install.

The full install involves converting from interior PCM in the stock location to underhood PCM next to the fuel pump and A/C Comp relays... so it's not trivial or readily reversible.

Actully, the tuner folks have been saying that the speed density system is sometimes easier to tune with non stock cams. They were considering not using the MAF sensor. You may be better off with the MEFI unit after all.

With the two computer systems, I've been contemplating the same thing, that is, figuring out a way to run both computers without any major harness mods. Can't do it as a result of the two pinout styles on the computer end. Maybe some sort of piggy back attachment.

Still impressed with your stock cams, Will.

Will, I think a set of headers will net you some massive gains. My motor was a bone stock 190,000km Vin 9 with headers and with Ryan's out of the box 7730 tune it ran this:



And with a bit of tweaking I ended up here, 20ft-lbs over your built short block:

I don't doubt it and I do have plans to build headers. There's just a lot of lower-hanging fruit to get first.

I'm amazed that my output is so low with the 272 cams and headers compared to both of yours. I don't have restrictive exhaust either. After the headers I have 3 inch exhaust into the muffler with 2.5 out on each side. Granted they are not 180 degree headers, but, geez.

Do, did, either of you have stalling issues?

I have an idle surge. I'm not sure if it's because I'm running L37 cams with an LD8 tune or a stick with an automatic tune. It does stall if you sink the clutch on low RPM coast-down.

I do have a stalling issue, but it's related to the wiring harness, *NOT* the engine management. IE, when I track down the intermittent connection, it won't stall anymore.

Have you verified the mechanical condition of your engine? Leak-down test each cylinder and watch for bubbles at the coolant fill point?

There's a Buick 3800 PCM about the same vintage as the OBDI Northstar computer that uses the same connectors. I have such a PCM and will be removing the PCM side connectors to use in a harness adapter.
