I'm embarassed to ask this. I just wanted to remove my blades (not just the rubber refills, but the whole blade that they sell nowadays at Autozone) and put the replacements on. Is there some secret to removing these things? Do they really want you to replace the whole arm everytime?

There should be directions on the package with the new blades. I use a flat blade screw driver to pop/pry the blade arm from the bayonet shaft on the wiper arm.

Mine has clips under the body that need to be moved back. Its kind of like a retractable c clip. Once moved, you can wiggles the arm off. It was a pain.

Thanks. No directions for removal...just installation. I just did what you said and it worked after a bit of struggle. I just didn't want to break anything.

Most of those chain stores will put them on for free when you buy them. Watch how they do it and you'll know for the next time.
The above reply is how to do it. Take s good close look at how the blades are on the arm and you'll see where to pry with the screwdriver. Some brands have a little arrow pointing at where to pry up.

There are several ways to remove blades. Post a picture would help.
------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. (Jurassic Park)
Tim....you can GENTLY use a small screwdriver and GENTLY pry the blade off of the arm. Did I mention GENTLY? Finesse is the key here, not brute strength. Brute strength breaks windshields, scratches cars, etc. In fact, put a thick blanket between the blade and the glass. Yes, this is paranoia. Read below.
I went to change them on my Mom's Explorer this last fall. I accidently let go of one. Yes, it broke the windshield. Yes, I bought her a new one. No, I won't let it happen again.
I used to use a screwdriver (GENTLY!!!) to pop them off. Then I got a couple arms off a late 90's fullsize Chevy pickup, converting the pin-style to the newer J-hook style. Well worth the $30 investment so you can use blades like the Bosch Icons, and don't have to worry about the pin snapping off in the middle of winter and waiting a week to get a replacement arm from the Fiero Store or junkyard.
Are you talking about replacing this - the wiper blade
Or this - the wiper arm
It was the top ones (only the older style without the plastic clips). I got them off by prying with a screw driver as described in the third post. I'd never seen that style before and I kept looking for some kind of release mechanism.

Wow, bummer. I'll keep that in mind. (Note to self: Never let Dan change your windsheild wipers... )
quote
If you squeeze the two halves together so the center mount becomes a round hole, the blade slides off the pin.
Now you tell me...

I hate that they stopped selling just the rubber refill since thats the only thing that wear out usually. I just let the store put them on anymore instead of even messing with them.
