i am doing a 3.4pr swap on an 86se, and i have a spare 85gt ecm laying around. should i use it instead of my factory 86 ecm? i have heard that the 85 with the nock sensor works better? will the factory work or is it never going to run right without a tuned ecm? anyone burn a chip for this swap or is it more of an individual car thing? i am installing a mild cam (engle cam from west coast), 1.6 rockers and polished and ported intakes/heads.... everything else basically stock. thanks in advanced!

You should be able to get away with the stock ECM with that cam, however you wont be able to fully utilize the increase in power it may provide without a tune to meet it. A good but timely ecm is the 7730 ecm.
In any case, give the stock one a try and if you need something better im sure someone here will pipe in with the pros and cons of the vendors
I would do the 7730 ecm upgrade. and Ryan can burn you a chip for a very reasonable price. More if you got the wrong ECM and he needs to order a memcal for the correct application.

None of the Fiero ECMs have a knock sensor.

85 2.8 Fiero's were not equipped with a knock sensor. The base programming is there and the ECM could be re-programmed to use one. You would be further ahead to use a 7730 ECM and knock sensor . The 7730 operates on a much faster cycle eliminating the pulsing idle. The 7730 is much more tune-able.

To answer your question. Either of the ECMs will work just fine and should run the same way too. Yes the 85 ECM can use a knock sensor, but you have to wire one in and turn it on in the code. Otherwise the code is basicly the same between the two. Different code masks but the same parameters and pin outs.
thanks for the info guys! i think im going to try my stock 86ecm and see how it goes before i dive into the electronics world and start rewiring everything
