Hey everyone,

I'm drawing a blank on this one. In the past I've used (for lack of a better description) some High Heat Rubber "straps" similar to one of those flat rubber bungee cords, when I had something that was directly making contact with a tailpipe or muffler.

I've searched on line and found a few prospects , but I thought I'd post in case someone uses something suitable . Does anyone know where I could find some sort of High Temperature Rubber / Synthetic "stock" that can withstand muffler / tailpipe temps?

I need it to be appx 1"-2" wide and appx 1-2 feet long - Something less than 3/4" thick would be ideal (2 pieces in those dimensions). I could cut down a "sheet" or I could cut a high temp hose lengthwise so I should have some options. If I remember correctly, I believe a cut a 1" I.D. High Temp rubber hose lengthwise and then cut to length. It was industrial and pretty thick.

Anyone have any ideas? Something similar to a radiator hose or heater hose would be ideal to cut down (provided it could handle the heat of the muffler or course).

I'm sure there must be something I could use

I didn't easily find any, but they make rubber "grommets" that go inder a band clamp and are used to mount exhaust stacks (the vertical pipes) but those pipes are usually 4" diameter.

phonedawgz. Actually Because of the space and the design, I need "rubber" that will / can actually touch the muffler / tailpipe.

See in your first pic where the tack weld is? I want the rubber in between the metal strap and the tailpipe (actually in between a "similar strap" and the body of the muffler but you get the idea). The muffler is suspended in an area with appx 2" above and below the muffler so there isn't room to use a hanger like that.

If I simply use the metal strap, it will transfer heat to the trunk floor. The ceramic high temp mat and heat shield I built into the trunk (combined with the air gap) is more than suitable but if I can find some rubber to insulate it further I'd like to do that before I finish everything up. The ceramic mat can take direct flame without damage but will transfer some heat on the other side of it. (We had the flexible mat glowing bright orange @ 4000+ and after removing the flame it immediately is bright white and cool to the touch again.

If it comes right down to it. I can actually mount everything without any rubber in between (I just won't carry a box of chocolate on my trunk floor :-)

2.5, That may be a possibility , A friend races Diesel Trucks and I left him a message as well. I'm searching now. Something designed to go in between a band clamp may work .

Revin,

Thanks,

That could actually work.

Do you know how much that goes for and if a "consumer" / small order is possible. I can fill out the quote form on the website now.

Check McMaster.com. They offer a decent selection of silicone rubber sheets/bars that are rated for up to 600 degrees.

Or go to the wife's pan selection... some times they have silicone/rubberized baking pans that could be repurposed because the dog/cat/animal ate it while she was gone. Something like these (cookie sheet for under $10):

Thanks Revin,

Fiero Guru, I actually had the Mcmaster site up last night looking for some metal for another project. I'll take a peek and see what they may have.

I'm going to fire up the track car and shoot the non-contact thermometer at the header collectors and see what kind of temps are at that point just to verify temp.

Also . . . My brain just kicked in 2 hours later . (should have had the 8th cup of coffee earlier). . .

I do have 2" wide Header wrap in a 50 foot roll and I'm sure I could use that as a "buffer" in between the muffler and the mounting points. I know that can take the heat and it would help with any metal to metal squeaking as well.
