does anyone have a picture, diagram, or would be able to tell me what wires I need to be looking for to work on my fan wiring?

I have an after market fan, that isn't wired right, It runs on a hot circuit so it runs even when the car is off. which I have heard is wrong, (it also kill my battery) and the ground shorts out sometimes, so the fan doesn't kick on.

it is an 84 2.5 if that changes anything

Did the car have AC? If so, there was a two speed fan and two speed relay. Non AC cars had one speed fans and smaller relay. The relay is mounted ahead of the driver headlight, if you lift the hood and turn on the lights, you will see the relay. Two speed relays are really hard to get, GM only used them on the 84's. See if the relay is there and if the fan is connected to either wire A or B (if it's a 2 speed fan). I just replaced my two speed relay with a single relay used on an late 80's F-body and just wired it to run on high when the AC is on or when the fan switch on the engine closes. If you had a two speed fan originally, i'd suggest doing the same. First find the relay and connector and see if there is power at the proper terminals.

it has AC, except that I just removed the compressor, it was discounted for some time, and the wheel was frozen up.
I think I see the relays, but right now it is not connected to either of them. the previous owner diverted power from some other source to power his temp switch. how can I test the relays, and will it work with the after market fan setup?

There should be no reason why your new fan couldn't be made to work exactly as the OEM fan. The previous owner probably had problems with one of the relays in the circuit but misdiagnosed it as a malfunctioning fan. He then probably replaced the fan only to find it didn't work either, so he hot wired it instead of troubleshooting the problem with the circuit. Here's the circuit diagram for your car... not the simplest thing, but if you need help understanding it, just post back here:

it's just one relay, it's rectangular with a flat connector with 6 or 7 wires. it's not the square ones near the headlight motor, the fan relay is mounted on the front bulkhead with 2 7mm screws ahead of the head light. Take off the connector, you should have power at all times on the heavy wire on the left side of the connector, that wire comes directly from a fusible link. There is also another wire, a small gauge red wire i think that will have power when the key is ON, that power comes from the 20 Amp C-H fuse. i cant get a wiring diagram at the moment, try searching the arc hives, you will find a schematic and the wiring is straight forward.

I have 4 of those double relays in my garage, they are all bad. some don't work at all, some only work on the hi speed and the high speed only comes on if the temp in the engine is very high or the AC pressure is very high, That's why I just went with a single relay and used the high speed on the fan.
