well last night i was driving down the highway when all of the sudden i started to slow down so i tried the give it more gas there was no response.
I pulled over and sure enough my throttle had dropped down and melted on the exhaust.
I was able to patch it up but now i need to replace it.
how do I get the cable out?

Remove the center console to get access to it, pretty easy & obvious once that is all out of the car and you can see the whole thing. Reconnecting it to the pedal was a PITA, though.

My engine is out of the car for a new throwout bearing and as long as it is out...other stuff that is a PITA with the engine in the car. I noticed that my throttle cable is wearing where it wraps arount the throttle cam...about half of the cable strands are broken....so there is a new cable on the way from Fierostore. It has been said that connecting the cable to the pedal is the hard part. Any thoughts to make it as easy as possible??? All suggestions appreciated.

When my 88 started to bind up I could not find another throttle cable so I bought some 3/16" ? cable from home depot and fed it through the plastic sleeve. I remember having the center console and center dash apart. Taking the seat out would make it easier. Either way its a pain in the ass to connect back to the gas pedal. Take note of how the throttle cable is snaked through the center console so the center console fits again.

After you gain access to the center console section, you will need to reach forward of the gear lever area
as far as you can to get to this.

This is what locks your throttle cable in place.
Pinch the tabs together to unlock.
After removing the cable on each end, (pedal and engine) attach a wire or heavy string
to pull the old cable and SLOWLY pull out the old cable.
You will need to pull from the engine side to remove.
Attach the new cable to the wire/string and SLOWLY pull in the new cable.
Of course you will need to pull from the pedal side.

NOTE. The locking tabs only lock in one position.
I don't remember if the tabs are left to right or positioned top to bottom.
Just remember to take note on how it is locked in place before you unlock it.

Using a wire or heavy string will ensure that you route the cable correctly.
I hope you have a small hand to get to the locking tab as you will need it.

EDIT to say that this was on my 88 when it had the V6.

well today I replaced the cable.
The trick with the wire was very helpful, however, to get to the locking tab on the cable i did have to remove the console skeleton.
also the the tabs are top and bottom making it that much harder to get them out.
