I'm replacing pretty much everything except the evap and the lines which I shall flush extensively.
New (not reman) 4 seasons compressor (hr6) etc.
I've ready different things about the oil to use, I think pag 150 used to be the recommended oil but now I've seen pag 46 as being the recommended oil?

So, any suggestions as to which to use?

Since I'm gonna end up spending 500 bucks on the a/c repair I don't want to destroy it out the gate by using the wrong oil!

Thanks

According to Four Season's installation instructions, a Four Seasons-manufactured HR6 compressor should use PAG46 oil.

PAG150 would be correct if you're reusing the old compressor, but in ltlfrari's case, he is using a new Four Seasons manufactured HR6 compressor, which in their own instructions says to use PAG46. This is probably because their new compressors are manufactured to tighter tolerances.

This is the correct answer. Different (re)manufacturers build their compressors to different tolerances, and that affects the lubricant specification to use. Always use the lubricant viscosity recommended by the compressor (re)manufacturer, even if it is different than the OEM spec. This becomes doubly important if you ever have to file a compressor warranty claim.

Reading the warranty fine print it seems that to actually qualify, the work has to be done by certified technicians and with proper equipment etc (and be able to provide proof of such). Since I am doing this at home that's not going to happen so any warranty is pretty much useless.
But pag 46 is what I am going with.

I guess the Murray rebuilt(which is basically Four Seasons) is different because I couldn`t find anything that said which oil to use so I called them and the tech line guy told me Ester oil.

Well, ester is 100 weight oil, so you'd be splitting the difference.

This is what I put in my Factory Aire HR6 before I knew better, but the compressor has been working for two years and counting.

Well, ester is also a synthetic oil so it covers all of the viscosity issues across the board.
I would guess that maybe rebuilders, in an effort to keep the problem of getting all of the old oil and moisture out, which can be a problem for pag, just sometimes recommend ester to cover the range.
Of course, then again if warranties state that the work has to be performed by a pro or they are invalid it is sort of a moot point.
