Remote control for outside mirrors (up/down/left/right only, the mirror selection switch is OK) has been less and less effective the last few weeks and is now sporadic on "left" and totally dead on "right". Subtle symptom: passenger side mirror now shows only the side of the car and I can't correct. I tried squirting the Magic Juice (WD-40) around the edges of the up/down/left/right rocker square and working the switch many, many times. Did not help.

How to access switch? Common problem? If can't repair, replace? Source?

Thanks for your advice.

First, check to make sure the connector is tight. the contacts inside the switch are probably dirty or just plain worn out, WD40 will probably not fix it, you'll need to take the switch apart, and carfully clean the contacts inside with a small wire brush.

from what I can see (my car has manual mirrors) you'll have to pull the center console apart, start at the shifter surround (screws are under the ashtrays), iirc, one the surround is removed, you should then have access to the screws holding the switch in place.

Yep.

Easy to take apart. You pretty much have to now that you've shot WD-40 in there, it's just gonna suck up dirt and make everything worse. Buff the contact areas with a scotch-brite pad and slap 'er back together. You will then at least be able to eliminate the switch in your troubleshooting endeavors if it doesn't work.

Thanks for the advice! Only problem I have now is getting the switch itself back together. The tiny retaining ring (friction fit) that holds the up/down/left/right square rocker plate's central spring and peg down stripped some of the plastic when removed. I'll try tapping it back as far as seems reasonable using a small cylinder of some kind, leaving room for movement, and then touch the end behind the ring with a soldering iron to expand.

Squeeze the retainer in a vice too to tighten up the teeth if you haven't already.
