After buying my Fiero GT last week it dawned on me to check all the fluids. Looking in my Haynes manual, I did not see anything with "power steering"! Does anyone out there have any ideas why these awesome cars were not designed with such?!?
Pontiac couldn't figure a good way to engineer a conventional engine-driven hydraulic assist since the engine's in the back and the steering rack's up front.
However, they did come up with a clever electric power steering unit for the 1988 model year. Trouble is, GM pulled the plug on the Fiero before Pontiac got the bugs worked out, so the electric power steering never made production. But I know there's at least one 1988 Fiero (a yellow GT) out there with electric power steering because it's shown in Motorweek's Fiero video, available through the Fiero Store.

i dont see why you would need it anyway, just one more thing to go wrong with your car, in my `83 crown victoria its a pain when the power steering die's , but i have no complaints about the fiero not having power steering.
I like the fact that the Fiero doesn't have power steering. It gives you the feeling of more control. Besides, if a "girl" doesn't have any trouble steering it...

one of the things some people claim killed Fiero is lack of power steering....... Only god knows why. Who in the hell wants power steering on a 2500# car. My pinto had it. I ripped it out. Power steering on a car this small is perfectly dangerous. the rack is only 3 turns lock to lock as it is.
I can't think of any person I know that is physicaly able to get into the car in the first place that can't parallel park it. But then most of the retards around here can't park a car worth a rats ass just driving between 2 lines..........................
As I said before, I think power steering makes you soft. If youve driven a car with pwr steering for awhile and then switch to a manual steering car like the Fiero, it will definitely feel hard until you get used to it.

my fiero was a girls car, she drove it for a year or so and got scared to drive it so her mom and dad just stowed it away in the back yard and let it rust, hehe. nice interior. if you need power steering in a 2 seater sports car you shouldnt be driving it

Did a SAAB once, [same class as my Sunbeam, "E" if I recall] YAAAWWWNNN! Fell asleep at the wheel! No road feel, no "direct link" with the car, just point and shoot!
The SAAB never even placed by the way. My buddys' Sunbeam allways placed first, and I allways placed second in class. The guy was a better driver than me!
Only vehicles worth the effort of having power steering were my exwifes' Caddy Eldorado, and my pick-up truck.
Your problems with the saab was likely improperly setup power steering. There is a torsion bar in the steering column. the bars used for racing are much stiffer. ((Nearly All NASCAR racers use power steering.))
