Many have seen my post in “The mall” about the 8,012 mile yellow 88 GT parts for sale. Here’s the sad story behind this fiero.

This was the 6th fiero built in 88 (# 200006). It was a yellow fastback GT. Yellow wasn’t introduced till mid-year. So I’m sure this was the first built. This GT was a press car. It was used by magazines and GM as a test vehicle. It can be found in Road & Track, and MotorTrend magazines from 87-88.

When finished with testing, the GT was donated, not scrapped (at least not yet).

The High School in my home town has always been looked upon favorably by GM. Every few years, GM gives the school another car for use in the auto tech class. The cars are used by the students for hands-on experience . Vehicles from the past have included supercharged Olds 98, Turbo T-Types, and currently a $75,000 Sony Suburban. The yellow GT was one of the cars donated. I attended this High School many years ago, and always loved the GT. But what I remember the most was the large square sticker in the middle top windshield “This vehicle has been donated for educational purposes. It CAN NOT be sold, driven, or titled. It must be destroyed.”

This GT’s last day came in September of 2001 when it was hauled off to the salvage yard to be crushed. A local repair shop knew the owner of the yard, and removed all parts from the GT. The frame was then crushed. The clocked stopped at 8,012 miles.

This was a bright yellow, gray interior, hartop, air, all power, rear defroster, wing, V6, 5 speed GT. The real stand-out about this GT besides the color and low production# is the power steering option. Power steering was never offered on 88s. Remeber, this was a “pilot“ car.

Here are a few interesting pics. Wish I had pics of the GT before it was destroyed.

Door sticker. Note VIN & production date:

Gauge cluster sticker. The number 220 1/2 appears in several places on this GT.

Rear struts have a "Engineering sample" sticker with a few hand written numbers.

I ahve no idea what this driver's hinge number is for?

Assembly line workers knew what they were building. The phrase "**** + get!" was written on the tank:

Frozen in time:

------------------
4 Indy pace Cars
84 T-top. IRM car
86 GT Red
86 GT Yellow
86 GT Pearl White 3.4 T-top
88 Coupe Red
88 Coupe Black
88 Formula Black 5 speed
88 GT Black leather
88 GT Black lumbar
88 GT Black 3.4, 5 speed, T-top
88 GT Silver T-top 350 V8 project

However......
"Time is the most precious and perishable of my possessions."

I was thinking that the car still existed......it's sad that it was crushed, but at least someone had the foresight to remove the parts.

I have a Car & Driver or Motor Trend (can't remember which) from March 1988 with this yellow GT emblazoned everywhere......something about the "screamingest mono-chromatic yellow paint ever".

At any rate.....it is sad that this car could not have been preserved in a museum....oh well.

That said......I really want the power steering set-up. Name your price!!

Other "educational use only" cars have been saved from the crusher. If it had a VIN number that was correct for the car, then it could have been retitled. It has been done before for other cars less desireable than the Fiero. I hope that every part of the car was removed and saved before its trip to the afterlife

That sux. I find it hard to believe that they wouldnt let that car be sold..and on top of that, they would donate it to a HIGH SCHOOL? Great, just what that car needed, a bunch of stupid kids screwing with stuff that they know nothing about. Oh well, at least the parts were taken off, and Im glad YOU got them! At least there is alittle silver lining in this story.

I agree. Its pretty sad they donated a very rare, if not the rarest fiero ever to a "high screwel". Even worse that it was crushed. What a waste .

Can we at least see pics of the power steering? I understand if you don't want to sell it, but you have to share a little of the glory with us visually!

I don't believe Doug has the power steering. Reason it's not for sale is cause the original person that parted the car knew what he had and dosen't want to sell the unit. I do know that if you pick up a P-Book you can go to the the power steering section and get the part numbers for the power steering and see a diagram of it.

Reality is correct. The shop owner kept the power rack. he said there was only 600 fieros built with the option...ah yeah!

I offered $500 for the power steering, went back and offered $800. I'll try one more time, but no way in hell am I going over a grand. I had to pay him dearly just for these parts....don't you hate it when someone knows you want something really bad.

Dude! That car was in Glen Dale?! WoW!

I guess you couldn't have gotten the school to let you strip b4 hand, or maybe they just didn't give a damn.

Good story, though.

I heard it was the last 100 Fieros got the power steering. Funny how different people hear/believe different things. I guess it's good that he thinks there are 599 other ones out there. If he knew the actual number he would really hold on tight!

Doug,

Assuming everything is there......rack, pump, hydraulic lines, reservoir, etc. I would be willing to go $1500.

If your next offer is refused please mention mine to him.....maybe he'll start to budge ($$ talks you know!)

Well, you CAN just let him hold on to them then! You know that he doesn't know anybody else that is willing to pay 800 bucks for "some stupid fieruh power steerin' deal"...

Let him sit on the parts for a few months, see how much good they do HIM! Perhaps 500 bucks isn't too much to ask then

According to Saginaw there were only 16 Fieros that had the electro hydraulic power steering, 4 were Formulas 4 were coupes 8 were GTs. All of the units, except 4, were returned to Saginaw because GM did not want the liability. Of the ones that survived one was a Formula (Yellow t-tops) the other three were GTs. Two have been acounted for if you post a picture of the power steering on this one it will make three that are acounted for.

Hmmm, Interesting. GM must write it off as "junk" when they donate a car.

Wish it gave a date for the salvage title.

Thanx, MoneyPit

Guys, I wish the guy at the parts yard had taken all the parts off the frame and put them on another 88 frame. Then the car would go on.

The car would be worth a heck of lot more than it would selling it piecemeal. An 88 frame could be had for $500 max.
