one year apart. fiero's fall 1983 (84 models), mr2's the next year.
oh yeah, the concrete evidence. go to the library, look in 1983 fall issues of motor trend, car and driver, or road and track, and see the intro articles for the fiero. look in the fall issues a year later for the mr2 intro. road and track did a comparison article when the mr2 came out in it's intro article. fall 84.

Not exactly. Only that the Fiero was ready for public release before the MR2. Keep in mind that years of planning, engineering, testing, and prototyping go into the production of a vehicle. I can guarantee that Toyota did not see the Fiero and say "hey... I bet we can make one of those too. Let's make it next year"
BTW: Welcome to the forum!
GTFiero1... you sound like you're accusing him of something!? It can be fun to "reveal" a completed project (instead of showing all the "in-progress" photos 1st).

Do some research and you will find Fiat's X-19 was here in the mid 70's, I had a 77 & a 79. You can't get any closer to a Fiero than that. Almost an identical set-up only it didn't feel as good as the Fiero to me. I DO think that "Wider IS Better!".

GM actually purchased several Fiat X/19's to use for testing, etc.
They looked at how they overcame cooling issues and whatnot.
At any rate......the Fiero was conceived in the mid to late 70's and was first produced in August 1983.
The Toyota MR2 was conceived in the same time frame (1976), but was put on hold in 1979. It made the show circuit in 1983 and was put into production as a 1985 model.
I think that if they hadn't put it on hold for several years it would have possibly beaten the Fiero to the marketplace, or at least would have been introduced around the same time.

But the MR2 was stopped in 1995. Then when Honda made it's S2000, Toyota brought out the MR2 Spyder. They both were designing cars to compete with the success of the Miata. Same reason Pontiac is doing the Solstice and Saturn is doing their version.

The MR2 was sold here non stop. The 1997 model was the last of the second generation models. In 1998 The MR2 spyder came out.
Hey, Steve! I couldn't help but ask this question......is Smooooth88 coupe some ffspring of the Smooooth GT? He's in Texas too! You better keep an eye on that car, or you are going to have to rename it SmoooothpromiscuousGT

That's exactly why I want to move to Australia. You get the Japanese cars but you don't speak Japanese. Haha.
Btw, are the RX7's still in production? I thought they were, even thought they stopped selling them here when they stopped selling every other good sports car.

You can say they came up with the idea whenever you want and it doesn't make a any difference. Look at the facts, when did the Fiero come out and when did the MR2? when did Fieros go to fastback and when did the MR2s?

The Fiero was the first one released to the market, but I was merely saying that Toyota in no way copied the Fiero with the MkI MR2......it was being developed at the same time as the Fiero.

Sadly I'd have to say, in the long run, the Fiero was beaten by the MR2. The MR2 started production in '85 and is still in production today. Why can't they come out woth a new Fiero? I think that would be a great rematch! The 2003 MR2 VS. The 2003 FIERO!!!...I WISH!
YES, the Rx7 is still being produced but not available. in the states.
