If you were pontiac and you were going to produce the fiero for 89, what changes would you do, body or engine. What would you do to make the fiero the meanest fastest production car out there, keeping in mind that you dont want the cost to be in proportion to that of a ferarri or something of that nature.

Back in 89 I would have...

Used a redesigned extra strong Getrag 5spd attached to whatever the top of the line V8 was available.

Today:

Very strong Getrag 6spd with either and LS1, the new 280x280 Supercharged V6, or a Northstar V8. And powersteering...yes....need powersteering.

Yea a strong getrag is a real good idea as is the top of the line v8. I personally wouldn't mind seeing a 456 hemi in one but i think it would change the fiero to much.

Other than engine and tranny upgrades...

I would move the spare to the back, or eliminate it altogether with run flat tires, so that the front could be a real trunk.

Improved glue for the dash so it doesn't peal apart.

Glove compartment

Need I say, Power Steering

16" wheels and tires

Airbags and steering wheel radio controls

CD player

Convertible

Just some of what I want

Here's the way I'd go engine-wise. The way the car looks and is designed is very European/Italian in nature, so...
Base Coupe: 150hp Quad 4
SE: 180hp Quad 4 HO
GT/Formula: 3.4 TDC
I would've also offered a convertible version of the Fiero, and updated its interior a bit. And definitely put the car on a weight loss program.

Stock 17" rims. Which in these days isn't so unreal.

Oh yah, V8 Northstar as well. :P

If it were 89: (More like 91 actually)
Turbo Buick Power. The 89 t/a's couldn't have used all the parts, you's need a fwd block as well.
16x7" front and 16x8" rear wheels, some decent sized rear tires, at least 245/45's.
Rework all the bolt on dash parts,(gauge pod, console, radio pod.) add 2 cupholders good for 1g maneuvers.
The 91 body looked good. So use that too.

2003: Just slap a Pontiac badge on the Caddy Cien, change the body so that it looked more like a Pontiac (without a committee telling them how it should look) than an art and science Caddy. They'd have to figure out how to make it under 30k though.
Or just take a Solstice and give it a MR drivetrain, change the styling to reflect that, and start swiping Aurora v8's for it. (It's not like Oldsmobile needs them anymore.)
Or scale the Opel speedster to a Corvette sized wheelbase and change the styling to look like a Pontiac. Throw the 4l v8 in that too. The manual trans should have 6 speeds, the auto should have an autostick system like the Cien.
The interior should look more like the Solstice than the Speedster.

all very good ideas, I think I would raise the wing about 1 inch and make the car ride 1.5 inches lower, I would also make front and rear swaybars stock along with some sort of adjustable suspension. I would move the battery up front to, and there would be no dingy thingy to annoy the crap out of the driver

All aluminum chassis! I think I heard they were going to do that and it would have cut off 35-50% of the weight off

of course the engines would very back then I think they had 3.8, 3.1 and quad but I would offer the quad to replace the duke and the 3.8 to replace the 2.8's could have gone with a 4.3 turbo kinda like the cyclone/typhoon.

16/17 inch rims.. other then that I love this car!
