i lost the camera during this at the beginning and toward the end it was something i was doing to keep busy while i was off work (death of my father) so i just didn't stop to take them till the end.

the idea was to have a sub in my convertible that could be out of sight. that meant no footwell sub. and because of the top mechanism behind the seats, i couldn't go there either. so i'm trying this.

the top is where i cut a wood circle big enough for a 12" sub, sprayed the bottom of my spare tire with lube, set the wood in the bottom and laid fiberglass up around it.

the bottom is where i remembered someone saying they were going to make a front battery box by shaping it out with cardboard and glassing it. i used that idea and used as much area as i could to get all the air space i could. the little extra square at the bottom goes down as far as the front crossmember and bolts to it. there are nuts and a strip of aluminum glassed into the box there. the row of holes at the top (pic is kind of upside down) also has a strip of aluminum and bolts to the sheet metal where the plastic tub meet it at the top. i did this to secure it to something better than the plastic and make it harder to steal. i don't think it can be taken whole with out disassembly. it may get distroyed if someone attempted to steal it but i'd have some small satisfaction that they couldn't use it either. also mounting it solidly gives me... i can't think of the term but it has to do with positive resonance tranfer bettween the box and the car it's self.

i ended up with a really small box...

did my best with the geometry and figure i got about .36-.39cf. i knew no 12" would work (that i could afford anyway) so i started looking at 10" subs and found one that has ratings down to .35cf. nakamichi sp-w104s, i know they make really top end heads so i'm hoping that quality tranfers to the subs. it was only $99.

something i needed to do was cut away the over hang hear the a/c condenser to get the tire to fit over the box. i don't know if i described that well. you might have to look at an uncut one to see what i mean.

all bolted in and wire run for eventual amp. since the rest of the system pretty much is stuff i've done before i started here so there is no sound test yet.

the minuses. really tight fit even with cutting away part of the tub. i had a grill on it but that was enough to keep the tire from going over the speaker. i also deflated the spare to get it back in so i'd have to put some fix a flat in to use it after i take it out (that might not be needed, with the grill off it may fit full of air but i need to get it reinflated). a 12"sub would have been too big for the tire go slip over anyway. also for the stereo savvy, no, i didn't vent it to the passenger compartment. i liked the idea enough to go with it and i'm hoping i can figure something out later. i have another fiero's dash compleatly out and i'm looking at it to see whats possible.

anyway there it is. i'm kind of questioning myself for hiding it then posting it on the internet, but i'm so tickled with it i just wanted to show it.
