I'm a "bit" of an audiophile and I want to load my Fiero with some nice stuff, post you specs and pics of your car/ideas to get my inspiration going
I've bought a spanking new Pioneer headunit yesterday:
With MP3 so I don;t need my CD-changer anymore, saves some precious space
I have a Rodek 6 channel amp lying around so I want to use that for 4x10cm in the dash and a sub, the radio for the headrest speakers.
Building the sub and amp behind the seats is out of the question... I thinking of building a case under the dash with a 10" sub and the amp in the trunk.
I have the KD-SK980 in my Fastback. The ELKAMELEON is in the Notchback with the Bazooka, both cars have the 4x10s The Sk980 plays CD-Rs and MP3s The ELKAMELEON will play CD-Rs but I have to buy an MP3 player. Both have good sound and using the stock seat and piller speakers fills in real nice. I need to put a sub in the Fast back and I will be set.

Right now it is sitting in the passenger foot space, it is strapped to the center console and my wife still has enough room to put her feet. I would like to buy / build a cabinet that sits under the dash on the passenger side but it works for now.

My pocket computer is my MP3 player, works everywhere, you just need an FM receiver, or put the headphones on. Needed it for work, so it doubles for playing mp3 through home stereo, cars, etc, etc.

Nice but I was planning for a bit more Watts than a headphone
The KD-SK980 has an input in the front for what ever you want to plug into it. My ELKAMELEON has a USB input in the back. I dont think I will ever use it but I also have a Pocked PC that plays MP3s I use it at work but it is mostly a toy.

My Pioneer has an input but I have to lose an output then. it has 3 line outputs (Front, Rear, Sub) and I need all of those to power my 6 channel amp. The radio itself puts out 2x50W (27W RMS) which is nuff for the seat speakers. Is it easy to replace those speakers of do you have to take the whole seat apart? What the exact wiring of the 4 seat speakers? serial or parralel or ...?

You will have to skin the seat to replace the speaker. I do know that you can unplug one seat and the other will still work.

Seems everyone I know hates radio so no wonder people are putting mp3 players in thier cars. One of my friends is getting satelite radio soon. It is suppossed to have large selection of stations & music. Im looking into gettig 8" subs behind seats because my exhaust is too loud.

I have 15 trophies and 2 IASCA Finals Invitations to show for it. My best score was 356 out of 400 on the IASCA scoresheet. That netted a 1st Place trophy in my class (150-300watts Amateur), plus I also won a Best of Show trophy.

That's the same amp that I've got, but I'm running to an Alpine 10" type s. The alpine sub is a dual voice coil, and was a lot cheaper than some of the good single voice coils I saw, so I got it. The speaker works good, I'd say 9 out of 10, 10 being perfect...starts to crap when you really pour on the power..at least I think it's the sub, not the amp. The amp has exceeded all of my expectations; it's behind the passenger seat, and never gets too hot despite a lack of *good* airflow. It's also really small, so it doesn't take up any room, and that was a huge bonus for me. It wasn't cheap at all, but it was worth it.
That's just a pic of the sub and headunit. Oh and you can see my speaker pods in it too.
Here's a list of what I got.
-Panasonic 60x4 LCD headunit -Kenwood Excelon 500 watt amp for the sub -MTX 300 watt amp for my speaker pods -Kenwood 4" components in the front dash -Blaupunkt overdrive 4x6's in the rear -Kenwood Excelon 6.5" components in the speaker pods -Pioneer Premier 10" DVC subwoofer in the footwell -Lightning Audio 1 farad capacitor

It wont let me open all the other components, but I have the model before yours for a deck, pioneer 4x10's. mtx's in the back, and a kenwood tornado sub in the footwell. It kicks pretty damn hard

Ok, this is not to highjack the thread or anything, the question is on the same topic. Has anyone tried making a sub box behind say the passenger's or both passenger and driver's seat where the box went all the way to the lip just behind the headrest so you get more volume out of the box without having to cut out the firewall? If you understand this or have any ideas... I'm thinking about maybe a fiberlass box like that, possibly with part of it set in to accomodate an amp... not sure. My friend and I are still brainstorming.

My sub boxes go from the floor to the top of the firewall. Cutting the firewall is done more for reducing the depth of the box, than for getting volume. It's a trade-off based on how much legroom you are willing to lose.
You can see the placement of the sub boxes relative to the center console and side panel. At location I & II it is 3 inches from the FRONT of the console to the front of the sub-box. At location III it is 4 1/2 inches from the bolt center to the front of the sub-box. In the second photo you can see where the front of the sub box is relative to the seat belts on the side panels.
How deep your subwoofers are will determine how deep the boxes will need to be, regardless of whether you cut into the firewall or not. I've done some more research and have found that some shallow depth subs are now made. These are high-end high Sound Quality subs. Be warned, you won't find these on sale at WalMart!!

Wow, some of you folks have some nice stereos. I opted for a budget system with a Pioneer 1.5 DIN CD deck, Pioneer 4X10 coaxial front speakers, factory headrest speakers (mainly just for a little rear fill).
Here's a pic with the seats out. I have a small 100 watt Rockford Fosgate Punch amp behind the driver's seat and a very small box with 8" Rockford Fosgate Punch sub behind the passenger's seat to blend in some extra bass.

Do you have more pics/info about the under-dash sub?
Sorry I haven't checked in on this thread for a while. If you do a search on footwell sub in the General Chat Archive, you will find a long thread I posted about how to buid one. I, too, am hopeless with wood. That is why the box is mostly made out of fiberglass. First make some kind of form to fit the footwell. I used construction paper, but someone came up with a great idea and used chickenwire to make the form. Cover that with fiberglass and bond the MDF face on to the front. Actually very simple to make.
Thanks fierosound. Yours isn't quite what I have in mind, bit too much work for me... I wouldn't mind losing TOO much legroom on the passenger side, but there may be times when my dad wants to drive and I can't take too much space, hence not under the dash. I'm currently about 6'4", give or take and can't risk losing room on the driver's side. Do you know how much room there is between the mounting bolts for the seats and the bottom of the back of the firewall? I would think that that'd be the main limiting factor on the very bottom of the box. I guess I'll hafta check. Oh well, thanks for the idea.

Chris, Here is a pic of my install.... The BLUE X is the amp mounted on the firewall, the RED X is the back board only covered in a diff. material Same Size as before, & the YELLOW X is the center con. It is in the same place as before. Note the PURPLE is how far the box is out from the firewall. 2 & 3/4" The seat bottom is about 4 1/2" from the firewall, With the bottom of the seat all the way back you still have over 2" of space.. You live in Ks. right? I'll be at the Ark. City show. I'll have my car & hopefully a car I'm doing now to show you. I can also help if you need it... LMK.... Thanks, Chris. P.S. We can just do the pass. side. It will still sound fine...

This is the link to stimpy's footwell thread, good info in there!!
I went to the local audioshop and measured some speakers. I think I'm going top buy 4 10cm Pioneer 2-way for the dash, leave the seat speakers as is. Find me a sheet of chickenwire to get the shape of the footwell and buy the passengerside carpet out of a scrapyard Fiero.
Next problem is my Rodek amp, in the trunk is a bit problematic with the wiring. The best position would be in front but there you have a mounting problem and a small wiring problem because the amp is 37x26x7cm and the battery is in the back. Do those battery relocation tray's from V8 archie work, where does the battery go? I've heard somewhere that the battery doesn't fit under the spare...
I think I will relocate the battery and mount the amp in front... theres a storm going on in my brain... I'll keep ya updated!
the only compleat (as a system of mine gets) fiero system i had was partially stolen so here are a bunch of mainly unrelated ideas from different fieros.
my '87 coupe i've had longest. this is a 5.25" coustic component set with an 8" jl audio in the pass. footwell. i'm suppossed to be switching this to 3-8" with one there and 1 in each door.
a 4" jensen in the center of the dash.
i might have got too close to tell what it is. the other 4" jensen in a pod that is par of my third brake light. i keep it turned down really low 'cause i never worked out the delay on it i wanted.
the head and eq were stolen but here are the amps...
thought it would be good to be able to take them out for security and to get to the spare. old computer bag with two fans added. no cooling probs ever.
real low power and old soundstream stuff. x-over gives me center out and added a cap 'cause i could .5 farad.

the rest is unfinished stuff. more or less in the order i've been working on them.
8" infinity 813i's right now hooked strait to a pioneer head. this is supposed to be my eventual big system (with 2 10"s, fierosound style and seat speakers. planning on about 500watts).
experiment. i want to get carpet without footpads and have the pods under it. this is for some 6.5" infinities.
another experiment. a 10" box that fits under the spare. still haven't figured out venting it to the passenger compartment. not hooked up yet either so i don't know how it sounds.
another 8" pod that's a little bigger to try and take more advantage of the size of the speaker. also bigger after i made the first and saw i could still get to fuses. i think unless you're a total basshead you could experiment and make the biggest possible pod and not need subs.
anyway that's all my stuff. hope there was an idea or two in there.

Your good with the fiberstuff I'm going for the 10" in the footwell... But gotta wait for some time before I can start working on it... got some work on the car that needs to be done first, audio has a lower priority than maintance...
I bought my sub box from a forum member and am very happy with it. It does take up a little space in the footwell... but I don't sit over there so who cares? Jamie

My Head unit is a little dated but it still sound really good. I have boston 5.25 seperates replacing the 4x10s. Boston plate speakers in the sails, and Infinity's in the head rests. And for bass I have a Rockford 10" punch.
Sony ES head unit 2 Sony ES 4 channel amps Kenwood EQ and Crossover. Sony ES 10 Disk changer.
Why does everybody replace the 4x10s in the dash with more 4x10s? The less round the speaker is, the less sound quality you're going to get out of it.. although I do admit Synthesis' 4x10s do sound pretty good.

I'm going to put 4x10 into the holes.. 4 10cm speakers I have some spare channels on my amp left.. but first the sub.
Can anyone post some measurements of the footwell case?
