ur both right. tourismo and touring mean same thing. GTO means Grand Touring Omlegata, SE means Special Edition which means they used parts left over (usually from a differnt model or previous year) to make you think its something 'special'. Lately, manufacurers have been going nuts with letters like GXE, LSI, LXI, LX. Mercedes has a system which makes no sense SL, SLC, SC, SD, SE, CS, SEL, SLK. SL is supposed to be 'sports, lightweight' but SLs are really touring roadsters and not light at nearly 4000#s, so go figure.

Cadillac is going to the letter system but at least it makes a a little sense. The car that was prototyped as the Evoq is coming out as the XLR = Extreme Luxury Roadster. And the new sedan that came out last year is the CTS = Cadillac Touring Sedan.

The slk, sl, cl, etc are just model names like Fiero. they don't use "special" editions...

That's your opinion.. Mercedes makes just fine cars and they don't have to change the modelnames to cover up the lousy old models

I love Mercedes. I had an AMG SL for over 10 years that I drove the hell out of and still looked gorgeous. That was a real girl getter. If they 'did' make a special edition, which i didnt say they did, it would def be AMG. I was just saying that their lettering system is totally confusing.

No, it stands for Catera(I believe the model is the Catera) Touring Sedan. Just like STS is Seville Touring Sedan and DTS is Deville Touring Sedan.

Well, in the immortal words of Carrol Shelby, when asked why he chose the name GT350 for his new Shelby Mustang, "If it's a bad car, the name won't save it, and if it's a good car the name won't matter."

In that case, it was GT for the GT racing series, and 350 because it was 350 feet from the garage to the test track where they developed the car.

The GT designation may have come from somewhere originally, but in Pontiac's usage, it means "the expensive sport model." Just like Formula means "the cheap sport model" and SE means "nicer, and more expensive, than the base model with extra bells and whistles."

For the Fiero, GT means "GT" and SE means "SE". There never was a Fiero Gran Turismo nor a Fiero Special Edition. And GTO is Gran Turismo Omologato.

Monkeyman gets an "A" for correctly spelling the words for GT and GTO. Gran Turismo and Grand Turismo Omologato.

Omalagato or Homolugated in English means that enough cars were produced to make the car qualify as a "production model" to compete in a class. Years ago NASCAR had 500 as the magic number. I believe that Ferrari was the first to use that appellation with a road car and Pontiac copied it with the GTO and even did advertising to "compare" the two cars.

OK, i flunked spelling...

Im not sure , but I think GTA came from sports car racing series like trans am. It was a class as in GT...A, B, etc. Im guessing the firebird ran in group 'A'. There must be a book somewhere that has all these abbreviations in it.......lol

Or.. Grand Touring American

I think the GT on my car stands for "Garage Tenant"...seems to love living in the garage, no matter if by choice or forced to sit there.

They're a lot more reliable when they just have to sit still, huh?

About the Mercedes names.Mine is a Special Edition. Called a 300CE Sportline.Factory sport suspension,special wheels,little spoiler front & rear.Still like my '85 SE and '86 GT the best.Just need 4 seats sometimes.Today someone said about my SE "that nice, toobad its not the V6". Wanted to argue that only the GT has a V6. I'm enjoying these things getting rarer and rarer. Think I'll save the GT for the day (GOD forbid) that something happens to the SE.Love it. Tagged for the first time ever last year with 1,400 miles.Just turned 20,000.

Sorry guys, I know this is off topic but can anyone tell me where to get snorkels/over-the-roof scoops (that look like fiero harry's) for an '88 GT. I have been looking for awhile but haven't found any that go over the engine grills. I was looking for 1 for each side. Sorry to be off topic, but I need advice from fiero experts!!!
Thanks--Nathan

Hmmm...
GT=Garage Toy.
Got Time?
Go Toolbox!

SE=Something Extra.
So Exhausting.
Start Engine?

Thought of a few other things for SE such as "Start Envesting", but I guess I'll quit being a Smart Es.
