WinALDL is a program that was developed by Jonas Bylund and Ken Kelly. The program itself can be downloaded from Jonas website at http://w1.601.telia.com/~u60113744/software/winaldl/winaldl.htm

The program can take the data stream from a 160 baud ECM and convert it into useful data. All V6 Fieros have 160 baud ECM as well as the 84-86 L4 Fieros. The 87-88 L4 fieros use a faster baud rate so they are not supported by this program.

What you need to use this program is a computer running Windows 95/ 98/ ME or Windows NT / 2000 / XP with a serial RS232 port (9 pin COM port). You also need a simple interface cable which is connected between the ALDL port of your car and the Serial port on your computer. Information on building one of these cables is also provided on the website above.

I have been making and selling these cables and they look something like this.

More information on these cables can be found at https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum4/HTML/012844.html

The program can display a dash which gives some useful information.

It also displays all error codes

Flag data is also displayed (unfortunately some of it is wrong though).

The voltages from all sensors are displayed along with the converted data.

Also BLM, INT and O2 values are displayed.

All of this data can also be recorded and saved for future reference. This is a wonderful tool to use for tuning your car after performance upgrades are made in order to get full potential from them. If you are considering having a custom chip made for your car this program will give you all the necessary information to do so. It can also be used to simply diagnose failing components on our 15+ year old cars. Personally I have used it to diagnose a failing oxygen sensor and a faulty throttle position sensor.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask away.

I'm about to send you my payment with PayPal. My question is - Is there any sort of glossary online that tells me what all those values mean and what is the 'normal' range that I should be looking for? Seeing it is cool.. understanding it can be downright helpful! haha

Whats the pin out of the cable? I can make one at work if I know what pins on the serial connector to use. Thanks,

Here is the best information I can give out on what the readings should be.

That is from the driveability section of a factory service manual. There is plenty of good information in there.

BTW: Songman I got your order today and it will be in the mail by noon. You were my first PayPal coustomer

The pin outs are posted in Johans website (the first link I posted).

Make sure you know what you are doing before you start. I have repaired several peoples attempts at building one on their own. I am no longer doing that because it just takes way to much time.

It can be fun making it yourself though.

Goodluck

what about horsepower and torque ? Can these values also be computed, or is this only a program for troubleshooting and such? I'm very interested in the cable, so give me a good word...

Nope, the program only displays parameters of the ECM in your car. You can definetly use the information to tune the car to get the most performance out if it but no way to actually compute it's performance.

I figure it is time that I should add a little information about configuring the program.

First thing is to select the proper ECM. For those with the stock 2.8 V6 the correct selection would be 1227170. For those with the stock 84-86 2.5 L4 the correct selection is 1225550, 1225570, 1225610.

As you can see here I have selected the V6 ECM.

Next is the calibration of the TPS sensor. As you see above there are two boxes. What you need to enter there is the voltage at the TPS sensor at 0% throttle and 100% throttle.

In order to do this you are going to have your cable connected to your car and computer with the WinALDL program running. Before you put the key in the ignition the little box in the upper part of the program should be empty like this.

Now go ahead and put the key into the ignition and turn the ignition to the ON position but do not start the car. The box that was empty should now be flashing a number (usually 25) which means data is being transmitted from the ECM. If the box is still empty make sure you have the right COM port selected.

On the program itself click on the tab "Sensor Values" as I did in an earlier post. You will see a value for the TPS sensor in voltage and %. With your foot not touching the accelerator read the voltage on the TPS and enter it in the box labeled "TPS Voltage for 0%." Now press the accelerator completely to the floor (make sure the floor mat is out of the way) and read the voltage again. Enter this value in the box labeled "TPS Voltage for 100%."

The rest of the values can be altered later to your preferences while using the program.

I am not sure when a different baud rate sould be selected. I would imagine that if for some reason you are not receiving accurate Data you might want to try changing this.

Does anyone know of a program that will read parameters from a 94 LT1 5.7L?

Earlier, somebody had asked about using a Palm for this.

No, I don't have the answer, but this is a Palm simulator, if someone with SW development knowledge wants to tackle it.
