Like many others i have heard of the track times, 1/4 mile and 0-60 times, as well as the HP this motor is capable of.

After discussing SD4's with a friend recently, i was told that the numbers that this engine boasts are just that. That No other numbers were ever documented from these motors other than that of Pontiac whom is less than an objective source.

i was a little preturbed at first, but after reflecting, i realized that other than word of mouth, vauge references here and there in threads, and the Pontiac literature that i have seen, there is no outside subjective info on exactly how much HP these motors "HAVE" produced.

I more than anyone want to believe that legend that these little Super Duty four cylinders are capable of up to 400HP. But as my friend stated, there really doesnt seem to be any legit numbers to back it up.

So if you have legit numbers, or know where it is, lets see it! How much HP can this engine REALLY
put out.

Well the "Rod Shop" built and drag raced an 85 Fiero with a 3.0L SD4 dyno'd at 385HP and has a documented 1/4 mile time of 10.47@126mph.

Car and Driver in March of 1985 tested 2 street SD4 Fiero's and Bob Earl's SD4 race car.
Both street cars were 2.7L TBI SD4's with 230HP engine dyno'd engines. The 1/4 mile times were 14.6@96mph 0-60 times were 6.2 seconds.
Bob Earl's Race car was 2.7L port injection rated at 285hp. 0-60 is 4.0 and 1/4 mile was 12.2@112. (Remember The race car only weigh's 2100lbs)

High Performance Pontiac Magazine took a 1982 Firebird and dropped in a 2.7L SD4 rated at 272HP using a 4-bbl carb and it ran a 13.2@100mph in the 1/4 mile.

Hot Rod magazine made a Fiero with an SD4 topped with a 16-valve head. I think the magazine was August or October 1985. Not sure of the HP rating but it was over 200.

Just found the article, It's Hot Rod Magazine October 1987. The SD4 was 3.0L 16-valved head dyno'd at 272hp. 0-60 was 5.3 seconds and 1/4 mile was 13.2@102

Vanderley Engineer is rumored to have built a 3.0L SD4 run on alcohol/methane fuel and maxed it out at 535hp.
