This has been in the works since last year, but then I didn't hear anything more about it.
I just got a call from the flag man at Claremont Speedway. http://www.claremontspeedway.com/

He wanted to know if I was still interested in pacing their races at least one night this year. He said depending on the reaction and feedback, I could be asked back a few additional times.
He also said that on some nights they have more than one race, as they have qualifying races and the like so if I was picked on the right night I could pace up to 7 different races in one night..
I said hell yeah!
I have to meet with him in the next week or so and have the Indy looked over, drive the track with him in it and pick out a helmet that fits. He said he will show me the correct way to take the corners, when to get off as they flag the start of the race and so on.
The only problem is that he said he will also want to check the Indy to see where they could mount the pace car amber light
I had a chance to get an Indy Fiero over the roof scoop with a custom light built in it around December, but didn't have the cash at the time. Aaaargh!!!
It would look really stupid having the pace light mounted on the Indy a different way than we have to come to know the way it actually was back in '84.
Any ideas on coming up with something better than they are going to do at the track would be greatly appreciated.

Whoo Hoo, I am gonna pace a race with my Indy! This is so cool!

I will post more info as I know.

Steve

OK, I really really have to track down an Indy scoop now and find someone who can modify it like other ones I have seen with the amber light integrated in it.
I have to have the full pace car look when I do this or this incredible photo op is going to look kinda silly.
Anything anybody needs I can trade parts for a scoop complete or incomplete?

I am sorry, I do not know yet. I can try and find out about any televised coverage as this comes together.

No, Bob has never gotten in anything like that. As some of you know, I have been looking for a scoop for awhile now since I got my Indy, but as it is actually not an original or stock part so it was always just an extra cool thing to have if I could find one. Because of that I wasn't very aggressive in actually trying to get one. That is.... until now.

You might drop 007doug (a.k.a. Fierowarehouse) a PM, after all he DOES have all the IRM molds (I.E. the original mold for Indy scoops)

Ok, it looks like getting the scoop isn't going to be a problem. However, getting it to look like this:

should prove to be interesting
Who on here can do this?

beachbomb, can you tell me who did your scoop? I know that you got it off e-bay, but do you know who actually customized it with the light?

Thanks

Ok, are both of you still on the forum? Can either of you two help me? Pleaze?
Anyone?

Also, it looks like all the scoops I have found for sale so far, all come without the hardware. That being the hinge, latch, and the strut.
Anyone have a set of this hardware, or maybe can make a set for us or at least know where we can get the hardware?

Whooooo Hooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got the call folks and it "IS" GOING to happen!!!!
A gentleman by the name of Jim Beabe just called me and asked me what I was doing on Memorial Day weekend?
Hmm, let me think...LOL
It is a Winston Cup race, semi pro division (who cares) and they want me and my Indy Fiero pacing the race. If they have caution flags I also get to drive back out and pace the cars for that too.
No TV coverage that they are aware of so far. They said being a semi pro division, the TV stations that cover these races randomly pick which tracks/races to cover. They could show up and cover this one, or be completely somewhere else in NH. Don't worry, we are planning on having plenty of coverage with camceras and camcorders for that day. As I work at the High school, we have public access TV here and I am very good friends with them. I am going to try and talk them into filming that day so we have TV coverage.

I meet with them at 1pm THIS saturday so his guys can over my Indy and show me the ropes
The track is also going to advertise the event of course, and wanted my permission to mention that my car will be pacing the race. Uhm let me think...DUH!
Hell yeah!!!
They are also going to do photo ops of me and the Indy on Saturday for promotional stuff
Which shirt should I wear? My Fiero logo polo shirt? A NEFA T-Shirt ? heh, heh

This is gonna be a blast!

We will try and get TONS of pics of this Saturday to wet your apetite with.

Arrrgghh!! I now need that scoop done a lot faster than I had anticiapted

Always good and bad news
Heeeeelp!

Congrats man!!!!!
Wish I could be there to see it.
I bet you are beaming from ear to ear right now!!!!

Good luck with it, and be sure to post plenty of pics

Oh btw, the 4 banger you sold last year, the maroon one with the big graphic on the hood, Any word on how that car is getting along? I REALLY wanted to buy it, but I fell short by about 100 bucks at the time.

Anyway good luck with the paceing of the race

All right! If you don't get any TV coverage, be sure to post some camcorder footage. I never saw any of the original Fiero pace cars in action, so I can't wait to see this!

As for shirts, either

or

Also something that came to mind:
Considering the guys back in '84 had to drop in an SD4, is the duke going to be able to keep up out there?

Well, considering how many Fieros you have, and the whole 'once in a lifetime opportunity' thing, maybe you could "borrow" a decklid from one of the 20+ others, paint it white, slap on an 'Indy Fiero' decal and bolt the scoop to the back? Or does it have to be hinged to even secure the decklid back to the Fiero in the first place?

I'd loan ya my scoop, but it's 1:24 scale

Exactly what I was thinking.
Besides, it will look totally lame to have a bubble light suction cupped to the roof or something

Shouldn't be a problem. This car had 185,000 miles on it at the time and I ran it at or over red all the way to carlisle 2 years ago. I've posted it several times to quell the doubts of nay sayers. I parked it last fall after I got my 88 on the road but she still runs good.

I am going to be the pace car, not one of the race cars
I am told that I will be pacing the cars around the track at 30mph. I am not even sure if I will have to shift it into 4th gear

Well, in just a few hours my Dad and I will be taking the Indy down to the speedway for the pre-check up and then I get to take it out on the track for a few laps. I understand that there are a few race car drivers there today who are taking practice laps and testing out things they have done on the cars. Maybe we can see how the Indy does next to a couple of them around the track
Now that would be a great photo op!

My Dad will have a digital camcorder and a digital camera to use, so we will take pics and some video footage of anything and everything today.
It would be a cool bonus to get some shots of the Indy buzzing around the track with a few race cars.
I can't wait.

Whatever pics we do get, even if it is just the Indy in front of the speedway sign and on the track for a lap we will try and post them later today. If I am not at a computer that I can post them, maybe I can e-mail them to someone who can?

Wish us luck everyone.

Steve,

Did you get the pictures in the other thread I took of the Scoop so you can show them to the Officals?

I'm actually excited that someone can use this scoop for what it was designed to do.

I hope all goes well.

Were baaaaaack!
It was a blast!
My Mom and Dad went too. I had my son Jordan with me in the Indy, and the people there were so nice.
While Jordan and I were down on the track snapping some pics, my parents were still up top taking a few pictures too:

A few more pics from Saturday:

Less than a week and a half away now.
The pace car scoop is apparently now on the way to me and the publicity for this is growing every day.
Keep in mind that this is going to be only off by 3 days of this happening exactly 19 years to the day of when the original Indy Fiero paced the Indianapolis 500 back on May 27, 1984

I hope to see some fellow Fiero friends there next Saturday. With cameras of course

Nope, I actually sold that last year to a forum members brother Aaron Kelley (no relation )
Wish I still had it though, as that was one sweet car. The looks I got just cruising around in that baby, especially after I built it up the way you see it in that pic was priceless.
But hey, now I have this Indy and look how much fun I am having with it

Guess what? It is now only 5 days to go.
UPDATE:
I have just secured a very special extra surprise that we should be able to get to come together just in time for race day.
This will be a photo opportunity like no other!

To guess what this might be, think about how my Indy looks right now and what it might need to look even closer to the actual Indy Fiero?

For those who don't guess correctly after that hint will be slapped with a wet squealing alternator belt

Did I say it was only 5 days to go?

Steve

1st and more obvious guess would be wheels, like the Chrysler wheels that came on Daytona's, Omni's.. etc.

2nd guess would be side molding painted white.

3rd guess is SD4!

[edit]changed #2 to white not red. duh![/edit]

You're going to let John Callies drive the Pace Car?

Didn't think so.

Gotta be the wheels.

It is now only 4 days away.

Another few hints on the extra special things. They are only things that you can see visually from outside of the car, so sheep skin seats and an SD4 engine would sadly be incorrect.
However, if someone would like to donate those seats and an SD4 engine for my Indy, I certainly wouldn't complain
Though having John Callies there would be a pretty cool thing, only I drive the Indy except for my Dad of course.
And red side trim? Yikes! Glad to see you edited that Tweek.

I will say that it is more than one thing and one of them is a new item that will be pretty unique for an Official Indy Pace Car while keeping with the Indy 500 connection. Being that it is a new thing, I will give a big hint.

I sent an e-mail last Tuesday to Bridgestone/Firestone and have since been working with the Nashville TN division of the company.
As we know, Bridgestone/Firestone has been the official tire supplier for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a very very long time.
They have coordinated with Interstate tire of VT, the local Bridgestone/Firestone dealer near me, in having something a little extra special provided for me and my Indy for this historic event.

Is that enough of a tease for you?

To answer a few other questions, the scoop is currently non functional.
We will try and make it look functional, but since I do not own it we will leave it the way it is.

The strobes are currently not wired up yet, as the first option we had to get them working was to run wires from the engine compartment thru the fire wall into the cabin connected to a loose switch where I would be able to turn the strobes on and off as needed. I didn't like that idea much.
However, being very good friends with our local Autozone, they came up with a great way to allow me to turn the strobes on and off without having to run any wires. They supplied at cost a remote switch that allows me to just push on and off buttons on a small key sized remote to activate and deactivate the strobes.
We should have this wired and working by Wed.
This afternoon though we have to go to Interstate tire and pick up the cool surprise thanks to my new friends at Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire Company

Whahooooo this is going to be so cool.

Did I mention that it is only 4 days away?

Oh, one more thing. I have just been asked to lead a Memorial Day Parade with my Indy the morning of....... Saturday May 24.
It is going to be a very very busy Saturday where the Indy will be seen by thousands

Again, I would like to thank everyone here for your help and support so far.
Cliff has also nicely added the event in the events thread that you see at the top of each page. Thanks again Cliff.

Well, gotta go for now.

Steve
