Going through some old photo albums (advice - don't buy the magnetic kind) and found some pics I took at Road America in the mid 1980's. Thought I'd post a few. Dole car and Goodwrench cars were GTU class, Entech Spice was Camel Lights class...ahhh remember the good old days, Fieros racing in a series sponsored by a tobacco company:-)
Also found an old Pontiac Performance Plus book by Hot Rod magazine that shows step by step construction of the SD-4 powered Fiero GTU car. Pics of every step, blueprints, part numbers, everything...cool reading!

WOW that is sweet! Some friends are trying to get me to go down there this weekend.
It's a great track, especially if you like to wander around during a race instead of sitting in one spot. You can find a lot of different vantage points, great for pictures. I haven't been there for a couple years, back in the 80's I used to get in to the IMSA events on a sponsor's pass (it's not what you know...it's who you know) which was great because you had paddock access and starting grid access. I think you'll enjoy yourself if you get to go. Is it a club event this weekend? I didn't see anything on the schedule.

Interesting...this car is numbered the same as the one at the 20th Anniversary show. I wonder if it actually IS the same car...
It sure looks like it. I don't know if GTU teams had multiple cars like NASCAR teams and some of the other series. I don't recall seeing extra cars in the hauler but that was almost ten years ago, and also you never know what they had back at the shop. I saw this car in the background of other photos from the 20th and couldn't quite make out if this was it or not. Thank you for posting such a great pic of it.
if it is they did a horible job on the resto the 55 on teh hood is diffrent and teh Stickers for products are diffrent and was bilstien even a company envolved in racing in the 80'S

More than likely, it is the same car. According to Joe Huffaker, there were only 15 original IMSA Fieros built. I would love to have a list of all of the teams that ran them. The car at the show was the real thing. It wouldn't be worth GM's time to do much for restoration. After closely checking out the chassis structure, exhaust note, and many other details, I am cerain that the car at the show was one of the 15.

Sponsors do come and go, as does race damage, although I am not sure if the IMSA was in any accidents. At any rate, looks like the "Bilstein" logo on the new pics replaced a "Delco" logo on the old one, also the "tilton" logo is new. Still, both good looking cars, and nice to see pics of them both.

Yeah, the 55 on the hood is definitely a different decal. Bilstein was involved in the IMSA series during that time, I don't remember if any of the Fiero teams used their stuff though. The sponsors who got me the sponsor's passes to get into the races were always either Bilstein or Bosch (I think I still have the hats somewhere). Part of my "duties" for getting into the races was to find out what shocks and other parts the teams were using and make sure they had a decal on the car if they were using either Bilstein or Bosch parts.

yes the 55 logo is different, but also note on the older pics the hood looks like it has a damaged or primered spot on it, so the hole hood could have been redone
