Man, that yellow is bright! Gotta put on my shades Looks good. I might be doing an off panel paint job too, but not sure. I'm afraid I'll scratch stuff when re-installing. Did you have much trouble with the moldings flying around as you were spraying them?

matthew..i ended up not taking the door skins off just for that reason...all those little torx screws were giving me fits. as for the moulding fasteners...yep..all but one. i am not sure what other panels you mean and the type of fasteners you are talking about(plastic rivits, metal rivits, screws, clips..etc?)
sqoach..thanks, but as for the mouldings flying around..i should have took a pic of my hand..yellow..mazda flippin' yellow. but seriously, i made a little hook out of some stainless steel wire and used it to steady most of the pieces and for hanging i used some wire for the little pieces and metal clothes hangers for the fenders, wing, basicly any thing that wasn't a little moulding. with using the hvlp gun ..the pressure was not to bad for blowing things around. those stands i made up were awsome..i don't know what i would have done without them for the nose and rear bumper.
it will be a while killer...i lost all my pics for where the fasteners go but first i have to replace all of the fasteners that were ruined in the disassembly process. maybe around christmas.....i hope. SNOWMOBILING SEASON IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!! WHOOO HOOOO!!
i must admit..that two sided tape that GM uses to attach those quarter windows is good stuff ..it took me about an hour and a half to clean up the mess that it makes.
anyways, on to my saga...here is the little black beauty all taped up and nowhere to go.
since i took my door handles off to paint them..i can only get into the car via the sunroof! so i will have to wait for that to dry up real nice and deposit my little ornery child in there to open the doors.
...oh ya ..the dog..she is sniffing for paint runs...highly trained in this field.
as for some of you who read an earlier part of this thread and was wondering what the "valu shade" metheod for this color of yellow was....here you go...everything has to be painted white base coat first and then the color applied. this makes the color very bright for it is not effected by the grey primer.
so after that process you nail it with a few coats of the yellow(i did 3 coats to make the shading even) and then smear on some clear(three coats..for i plan to wet sand and buff out the "scooby snacks" that ended up in my clear.)
i can't wait to put this little puzzle back together now!! and get my rims!!

Beautiful work gt boy! I love yellow cars anyway, but this one catches your eye and draws it to it.
Got a couple of questions though. Why do you feel it necessary to remove so many body panels and paint them separately? Why don't you just remove some of the obvious stuff, tape it up and paint it? I don't see the advantage. Enlighten me please. Thanks
Phil

Probably because hes doing a color change and want to make sure none of the original color can be found
I realllly like yellow Fieros. If mine wasnt blue id definatley have it painted yellow. My next one with definatley be yellow

GTfiero1 is correct...it is all because of the color change thing. i just didn't want to lift my hood and see a strip of black somewhere and some yellow over spray(i always miss something when i am taping). yes i could have left a couple of the pieces on there ..but i wanted it to look a little like a factory job, example: if i didn't take the bottom ground effects off and you are not an expert painter like myself, i find that i have a hard time getting the spray controled enough to get into the seams to make and even coat with out some puddling or a run. therefore when the effects are removed and you do each seperately, you don't get that "just repainted" sort of look where the paint collects and might hide the seam. that is my opinion but with some practice i am sure i will get much better. i have learned so much already doing this job that the next one i paint will be done a little differently.
i will post some pics a little later tonight on the buffing and polishing that i have done so far.
santa...you wish is my comand. i only had enough time this weekend to do a couple of things to the fiero. i was able to enlist a little help from the brother in law to install the rear deck lid and rear bumper. the rear deck lid had to be re-aligned and the rear bumper ajusted up to match the side body mouldings, this took a little time to do but was well worth it. alll of a sudden he had to go to work when it started snowing so my attention turned to other parts of the project.
i had just picked up a 7" 2speed buffer/polisher and some pro series meguires fine cutting cleaner and pro series meguires scatch remover. but before i used this stuff, i was off to wet sand the beast starting with 600 grit wet just to breifly knock down the high spots(i had quite a bit of orange peel)then onto 1000, followed by 1500 then 2000. thats when the fun began. zipping around you freshly painted car with what seems like an angle grinder is a little intimidating at first but you learn to get over it and start to concentrate on what you are doing and being very careful not to get any "paint burns" with the buffer. even though i was trying my best...i still managed to burn a couple of edges so i taped them up and didn't have any problems after that(i wish i would have thought of that earlier). oh well ..here are some pics of it so far.
here is another pic of the buffing. sorry but the image doesn't give you the true shine that the car now has..even before i started this ..i thought it looked fine before i started buffing. wetsanding and buffing is really well worth the effort though.
after i had the car buffed, i was able to start to install some of the pieces that i had taken off like mirrors, rear side marker light and my "new" gas filler upper area. before it was dark stained and yucky...now look at it! sometimes a little attention to details can really pay off.
also since i really couldn't hang anymore body panels because i didn't have the fasteners yet, i was able to fix my drivers side door lock where the push rod popped off and got mangled from the power window. i also installed the door handles and re-shimed them so there is no more play in them(man i hate sloppy door handles!). now they operated really slick, almost like brand new again! sorry no pics of that..but if you want me to tell you how i did that, let me know.

thanks kid. some five spokes are coming after christmas.
fieromaster 88....trust me i can't wait to get it all back together also. it has been 2 months so far trying to get this completed..but i knew that going in to it. time is really hard to find around here.
Wow, I love that colour!! It'll be awhile yet until mine is to that stage, maybe by the summer. Keep up the good work, and let me me know how much/where you end up buying replacement 1/4 windows from, and if you have any big duty/shipping costs since I'll be in the same boat in the spring.

killer...i will be getting them from doug at the fiero warehouse a little after christmas. from what i hear around pennocks is that he has the best replacement windows. i could get GM ones but i don't really feel like dropping 600.00 on a set of them. so 200.00 u.s. for some tinted ones form doug should do the trick.
oh ya...i too feel that yellow fieros rock!

Since I was thinking about repainting my car on my own as well, I have a few questions for you:
1. Maybe I missed it on the first page, but what is the white coat underneath? Is it just white paint or is it some special primer?
2. The gray primer you used - did you use the spray gun for that too or just spray bombs?
3. Did you add any flex agent to the primer and / finish paint / white undercoat / clear coat?
Thanks for any info!
1. I would venture to guess it's a white sealer, like a primer but it is not a think, in other owrds, it won't really fill any sanding scratches or anything
2. You really want to use a spray gun for primer, you'll get better fill
3. There is another topic in the tech section that I believe GtDude started that will answer most of your questions about teh flex additive.
gtboy, Sorry, I hope I didn't butt in and if I'm wrong correct me. I can take it..go ahead..LOL
Anyways, when are you going to get this thing together man, I'm dying to see some nice sunshine pics to burn my retinas

Hope this answers the question about the white primer. This is also what was done to my car when it was painted and was told the same reason from the guy who painted my car.
voytek...i did not use primer in a spray bomb. it was a product from dupont in their nason line....i think it is #423. gray sealer/primer.( i threw out the can) i sprayed it with a siphon spray gun.
voytek and 2xsess, the white is part of the system of getting this yellow nice and bright. it is the same as the yellow base coat but it is white, that's it.
as for flex agent, i did not use any because i used ureathane paint. the quality of this paint is good for our type of "plastic" cars.
thanks for the help dan. nice car BTW.

guys i have to confess...i haven't did a damn thing since snowmobiling season started. i received my fasteners from rodney dickman and that was the last fiero thing i have did since the end of november.
i just fixed a leak that i had in the tranny and now i am starting to get the itch to finish the job.
i have just put my snowmobile away for the season and have just finished ordering a new one for next year.(when snowmobiling season starts...everything goes on the back burner!!!!)
hopefully in the next week or two i will have the reassembly almost complete. i am just waiting for the warmer weather to arrive so i don't have to pay a crazy hydro bill as a result of heating my garage.
so check back in a few days and thanks again for the interest in my project.

awesome, if it isnt too much of a bother, can you get a pic of a profile before you throw the spoiler on??
The reason I am asking is that I am seriously starting to consider yellow for a paint job, and it seems as though I might be able to paint myu car in less that a month here. So far, I am trying to decide between viper yellow, and mazda.
EDIT: NM, I forgot about that lost post you made, that showed the car with the spoiler allready on... whooops.

well kids ...i almost have this old dog back together again...here are a couple of pics.
now before i can take any compliments on the job...i have to tell you i did a brutal job. the pics don't do it any justice. the color is way off and i don't know why the camera isn't picking that up but ....i am not very happy.
i could live with runs in the paint and orange peel....but this inconsistantsy in the color is driving me to drink ...but i think i know where my problem lies...in the lighting in my garage. when the car is in the garage it dosent seem that bad....but when you roll it out into the natural light...oh ...my ...god... i think this was my problem when i was painting in the garage..some at night with full shop light and in the day time the windows would let in sunlight and give me a different look.
oh well ...i don't think this car will be going to any shows or driving in the day time until next year....when i can get it resprayed. i don't have the time or the money to repaint it this year.
oh well ..time to sulk for a while and eat cheesy poofs until i burst at the seems.... ..later.

I can totally related. Do you think it was because you painted it piece by piece and on different days? Wasn't this a high-solid color, meaning not a pearl or a metallic? Could the primer have affected the outcome?
Sorry to hear that it didn't turn out as well as you wanted it to. Kinda puts a damper on my enthusaim for repainting my GreenGT myself (although I'm still going to try!)
