Woohoo! 5th page!!! Here's the list! If everyone that's on it could please send me an email, or PM or something to confirm that you still want one, (or want to be taken off, or correct what I have for color, number of them, etc..) that would be great!! I'll try to update the list daily to keep up with it. We'll have to work something out for the payment - I'd like to not take $$ until I actually have the completed products in my hand, and in existance, but I know some will probably want to pay early so they'll ship as soon as they're built.. Money order would be best, as it's more secure (been hearing bad things about Paypal...), and I need to add $2 to Paypal payments to cover thier fees, but I will accept it. I'll most likely be bringing a bunch of these to the 20th Anniversary too, if people would rather see them work first and buy them in person. Guess that's it for now! Thanks everyone!

Well, You know I'm still interested Rice. =) Glad things are going so well. So what exactly is the final price of them for us who were like the first 50 to 60 who told you we would buy them? Also, if it would help things, I can pay for mine now. Would you be using paypal or what? If so whats the address? I've also changed my mind about the color i'd like if you had it written down. Its changed to red. Anyway, thanks alot!! Matt

If you want you can... The prices are still the same - $55 for Red, $58 for Green or Amber, and $67 for Blue. They'll probably go up $10 if I put them on Ebay. But for Pennock's people, I'll keep the profit low and stick to the prices I started with. My Paypal address is riceburner98@attbi.com. I should be able to accept paypal, but I'll have to ask for an extra 4%, or $2.00. (100 units * Paypal's fees = $200!) I've heard so many bad things about Paypal lately that I'm kind of scared of it now.. That said, Money order would be best, but I realize it takes longer and costs $ to get and send one.. Anyone have experience with C2it by Citybank? I've heard that's more secure / less fraudulent than Paypal... Haven't checked into it yet though... Oh yeah, I'm going to get off my butt and put up a list of people here too, hopefully later this morning.. Need sleep now!!

I only have the 1 set that I ordered to try out... I'm looking for another supplier, or another way to make it work... Argh!!! If anyone's going to send $, I want to be sure you understand these won't be ready for another 2 weeks or so, when the boards come in.. Man I need sleep, it's 4am!!

I will be at the 20th in Pontiac, I'm staying in the Hotel, else I can just go ahead and have Bank of America electronically send you a check if you just give me the particulars... total cost, address, etc.....

I'm working on a way around the blue ones - the display is made up of a 2-digit and a 1-digit display, and they were backordered on the 2-digits. But, they had about 700 1-digits... So I'm going to make an "adapter" of sorts, to convert 2 1-digits into a 2-digit. Fun. I was going to get the list up here tonight, but I quit working on the Fiero at 8:30 and headed for home, what should have been a 45 minute drive took 2 1/2 hours!!!! ROAD RAGE anyone!?!?!? Good thing the last accident was less than a mile away from my Exit, or I would have found out what the top speed of my Neon R/T is...... I still might do it tonight (put up the list, not the top speed thing...), but I still want to eat (95 degree heat and 90% humidity all day working on the Fiero!!! I'm starving!!!) and shower (I'm SOAKED in Bug spray, grease / dirt mixture, gas, and tranny fluid... ARGH! Oh yeah, are you supposed to get Acetone in cuts??? OWWWW!!!), and I haven't slept more than 4 hours for a few days now... I tried 2 different Home Depot stores to buy a "Mosquito Magnet" (For $300!!) and they were both sold out... I swear the mosquitos are on STEROIDS this year. Man I have not had a fun night. Hope tomorrow is better, I'm supposed to get some parts for the HUD in... - Bob

Just a "bump" to say that I edited the first post on this page to put up the list-o-people. Like that post says now, if anyone that's on it could email me if any details are wrong, or to confirm, or send a mailing address for my records, or to be taken off, or added on, or....? Any details I can get out of the way now will make it easer to get these out when they're built. Soon now! Thanks!!!!!! (And THANKS to Oliver Scholz for creating these things in the first place!!!)

Cool, I got the PM's and emails, but I gotta run to a BBQ / B-Day party.. It's too hot outside for these things!!! I'll be back 2night though. Edit: Man that was a hot room! No A/C! At least it was indoors with fans.. Anyway, I updated the list - I have a horrible memory, so if anything is wrong up above, please let me know! - Bob

Put me on the list for one red one, please. I'm sending the paypal now! When can we expect delivery?
Just curious, you mentioned that there will be units available for 4000 ppm and 2000 ppm (Fiero). What is required to use 4000 ppm instead of 2000? I'm just curious if I could use this on another car by jumpering/exchanging something or if I have to order another one with a different chip.
Thanks!

LOL, yep, finally. They should be ready in 1.5 - 2 weeks. Boards are supposed to be in on 7/8/03, and I have most of the parts now. Just have to figure out the blue ones becuase of the parts shortage... The 2000 / 4000 pulse thing is in the programming, so yeah, you'd need 2 units to do both.. I need to update the list, I've gotten a few more emails and PM's. It's almost 2am! woohoo! (I'm up working on a cool analog / digital thermometer for an "employer"... Fun!)

Man everyone is up late tonight! Yep, got it in the mail today. Can't wait to get the boards in now... I'm going to hang on to everyone's $ for a while just to make sure everything goes OK, don't want to spend it then have to refund it for some reason! LOL This is the first time I've sold anything besides random parts on Ebay or something. Hope it all goes OK! (Edit: attbi.com seems to be officially down for the count.. I can't log in to update the order list.. Comcast is taking over, supposedly changing all the email addresses and everything tomorrow. Don't know what's going to happen to the web-hosting, if they're going to keep it the same for now. I'll probably be riceburner98@comcast.net by tomorrow though! Email should be forwarded for months though, so I *should* get everything that anyone's sending..)

Yep, I did yesterday but Comcast (who has beaten to death and taken over attbi) was being a pain yesterday. (transition day) I couldn't check my email or upload anything until today. Now I have to go around changing my email address everywhere, (riceburner98@comcast.net) and any references to my webpage. (my sig seems to have disappeared...) Fun. NOT! The only positive thing to come out of the "Merger" is I have 25Megs of space *per email account* now, and I have 4 email accounts, so I can store 100MB now, instead of 10 per account. That's cool.. Oh, I also alphabetized the list to make names easier to find..

Still waiting for the circuit boards. I haven't heard anything from the manufacturer, so they should still be here by the 8th. Then I can start cranking!

Nope, just the speedo ones. The tach versions will hopefully come in the future. Time is just going by so fast, I can't even believe it. I'm having serious doubts that I'm going to be driving my Fiero to the 20th, I haven't done squat to it lately. I'm not going to have *any* time in the next week, I'll be in class 'till 3:30pm every day, then home to build HUD's. That gives me 1 weekend to finish the thing. Nope, I don't see it happening.. I hope to get these HUD's out to everyone ASAP, I just hope everything is OK with the circuit boards when they come in. I'm sure I'd be having nightmares about problems, if I ever had the time to sleep. Don't have much time for even that any more though. Fun. The 20th anniversary is going to be a MUCH needed mental break! Maybe I'll even get some sleep!

I've been watching this thread since it began, and I've got to hand it to you, you've done a great job! I def want 2, one for the Fiero and one for my Spec V (already checked, it takes a 4000 pulse). I've got the $$ ear marked for you too. I'm just trying to decide on what color I want. Quick question for you. Do you have a potentiomter rigged up to control brightness? Thanks

Cool, thanks! Yes, I found a decent potentiometer with a knob long enough to stick out the side of the enclosure, so you won't need a screwdriver to adjust the thing. Just enough to grab with fingers. Would have been nice to make it automatically dim with brightness outside though...... Yeah, right! I still have to work out how I'm going to do the blue ones, so those might be a few days to get ready after I have the other ones... I need to order some "adapter" circuit boards to make the 3 seperate digits work in place of the 2digit+1digit ones. Just need the time!
Bugging is OK.. No, the boards didn't come in yet. I think the holiday slowed them down or something. I did get the Airborne Express tracking number though, and they're supposed to be in tomorrow (Thursday). http://track.airborne.com/atrknav.asp?ShipmentNumber=40299388673 is the tracking number, in case anyone's wondering.. I can't wait!! I got the cables in today, and bought some Lexan to use for the lenses. The smoke lense was just blocking too much of the light in my opinion. If someone does want the smoke lense though, please let me know! Otherwise it will be clear, which is cool 'cause you can see inside too.. Anyway, they're on the way!! I'm actually waiting on more red LED's, I don't have too many left from the original order.. God I hope those make it in time! They said 1 week from 7/2, which is Today, so they should be in before the boards are. Now I need sleep! LOL

I was just wondering how you want to go about dimming the brightness? There is no provision in the circuit, and I wouldn't put a pot in the supply line, not a good idea.
It would have to be done in software, problem is there is no A/D input on the CPU that could control this. It would be possible to control the brightness with the serial input, but where would that signal come from?
Bottomline: let's get the current version to folks, or we'll never get ready with all the modifications and feature suggestions (which are good, don't get me wrong, but they delay everything for everybody else)
Best regards,
-Oliver

Did the boards come in yet? I'm *really* hoping I can get this at the 20th event, I've got a lot of highway to cover on the way back...would be fun to play with it on the trip.
LOL... Unfortunately they're not quite up to Grand Prix factory HUD specs.. Just a nice, simple add-on. Has anyone seen the factory ones in sunlight? I've personally never driven a car with a real HUD, I'm just wondering how bright they are in sun.. LED's unfortunately get somewhat washed out in sun, (they use vacuum-flourescent displays in factory ones) I just want to make sure people know that they won't be super-readable in direct sunlight. I honestly haven't had one installed for quite a few years now, so I can't say how well they do work in the sun. I did use the brightest LED's I could use while keeping it cheap, so it's as good as it's gonna get! I did get the circuit boards in today - just finished building one, and it does work. (woohoo) I'm going to try to make as many as I can before the 20th, to ship to people that have paid, and to bring to the show, but I'm trying to juggle these with getting my engine in (ready to go in, just need time!!) in order to make it to Michigan and not get stranded.. Would be nice if the show were an extra week away, but that's not happening! I'm also still waiting for more red LED's, which should have been here by today.. As for Oliver's post above about the dimming - I *did* install a pot (variable resistor) in the supply leading to the LED driver transistors. It can easily be bypassed if necessary, and basically is bypassed when turned full-on. (0 ohms) One reason being that if you have, for example, 81 mph displayed - there are 7 segments on in the "8", and only 2 on in the "1" digit. They both get the same current through the variable resistor, so the "8" divides it up among 7 segments, and the "1" divides it between only 2 segments. The result is a slightly dimmer "8" than the "1". Oliver - is there a more important factor that I'm missing with regards to the pot in the supply line, or is that the main problem? (ie: should I not install any of them, or will they be OK besides the slightly dimmer digits?) If anyone has any concerns about the dimming, "readability" in sunlight, or anything else, please don't hesitate to contact me, by PM, Email, or by posting here.. Don't want anyone to be unhappy with these when they get them! Thanks all! - Bob
Unfortuntatly no.. Not anything good anyway. I haven't had time to design the adapter, and they're still backordered, but only until the 16th of July now. Not in time for the show, but soon enough that it really wouldn't make sense to design and order an adapter board. I do now have 51 single blue LED's though, and have ordered 20 2-digit ones. Woohoo, I'll have 31 singles left! LOL Time for another project..... And sleep...
Thanks For The Fast Reply....I'm Interested In One Of The Blue Ones Whenever You Get Them Done. Not In Any Big Rush, Just Interested In One When Your Done.

regarding the pot in the supply line, there are actually several (connected) issues that come to my mind:
There is a voltage drop across the pot that is proportional to the current, which as you correctly pointed out depends on the number of segments that are on. Say your LED draws 50mA per segment, the difference between the number 1 and 8 is a factor 3.5! Depending on the LED that can result in quite a bit of brightness difference, especially at night.
If the voltage drop gets too high, some numbers or even segments may not light anymore while others still do
The thing to do would be a PWM chopper in the supply line. If you use a PNP transistor to chopper the supply to the multiplex transistors, you can dim the disply without adverse effects. You need to select a frequency that is higher than the display multiplex frequency to avoid interference. The PWM can easily be generated by a 556 timer. You can build that as an add-on, by replacing the pot by the transistor, and wiring the timer in to supply and ground. I'm sure you can also use the IP-dimmer voltage to control the PWM, but I don't have time for that right now...
Best regards, -Oliver
