I'm agreeing with Drex on this one, this thing screams vette killer... and for 1/2 the price back in the day... we now know and have confirmation of the REAL reason that the killed the fiero. The rumors are now becoming so clear.
Did anyone notice what kind of exhaust system or engine mounting GM used for the TDC? That might point all of us swapers in the right direction. Any pictures of a dogbone?

It's amazing, but a little sad. None of us will ever have one. I don't want the prototype. I want what it would have become if it made it to full production.

my god! the Fiero tach must have a 300 maybe even 400 higher redline! Thats way higher than the Trans Am's! :roll eyes:
Actually it really doesnt, that must be an LT1 pod. The 3.4 pod has the same redline as that Fiero pod and the 3,8 and LS1 pod have higher redlines
and the firebird has a 120mph speedo
The Firebird/Trans Am has as many pods as there are engines, the one I showed was LT1. A 3800 pod, (like in my car) would only go to 120 mph. And for the last time the Firebird looks like the 90 Fiero Prototype!

steering wheel dont mean anything. With a prototype, i hardly think they'd worry about what steering wheel they were gonna thow on. The 90 coupe looked like a coupe and it was crushed along with the 90 Formula

I hadn't thought a lot about pricing. But I was considering making one of these pods for my coupe since I have enough parts to do it. I would need to have a core or core charge for the Fiero cluster and switches. The rest is just my time to fabricate the cover and wire it up. I tell you what, If I do build one for myself and it comes out decent and doesn't take too much time I will offer them for sale

For some reason i don't think that was a grey one. The grey ones were notchies right? If you ever had a realy good look at gm's factory paint, Theres overspray everywhere. Just my thoughts.
i dont know about most people... but it all looks like the exact same car.... does anyone even have 2 complete side views to prove there is a notch and GT model of these? so far i have only seen back views of the so called "notchies" and they look exactly the same as the GT *shrug*

Wow, looks like that car was far ahead of it's time as far as engine and body styling. A 94 vette and camaro/firebird is supposed to look more modern than the prototype? I dont think so. That car looks like it could be released now and you would'nt know it was made 10 years ago. And that would've been the first car with the DOHC engine.

Do you think that this will be the last time that we ever see the Fiero prototype again? Do you think GM will just crush it now that everyone has seen it up close and personal ? I hope that they will put it for sale or something so that someone can stick it in a museum for people to enjoy all the time.

Ohhh boy....I hope you guys don't kill me...but I have to say it anyways....
I used to have this fascination with the 90 prototype...and after seeing the pics I have decided that I prefer an 88 over the 90... sorry to disappoint you guys, but there is something special about our 80's fieros, that GM just didn't seem to capture in the 90's..
A lot of 90's cars all seem to have the Chevy Corsica/Beretta look to them, I don't know how to describe it, but nothing like the wild experimental 80's. It just seems that the interior got more rounded, the body got turned in to a trans am, and the engine (all thought it is nice) looks hard to work on. It just seems that GM lost there craziness on the 90's as they tried to tame it down for the mature buyer...
If I were to design the 90, I would have made the body shorter and wider...the 24 valve is nice for some, but I would defiantly offer the LT1 or some other V8 option. I think the 90 prototype would be a nice coop, but it doesn't have the wild GT feeling...
....I donno, what do you guys think?
I hope this doesn't offend anyone, I know some of you worship this car, but I realize the fascination about it was just because it was a Prototype...
PS....I do like the Fierochic88 option!

The 2 switchs ran the power decklids in back, the left was for the engine decklid, and the right, was trunk decklid. and MY GOD the truck lid weighed 200+ pounds, it couldn't support itself!!! The center caps, I don't know about, it had some sort of prototype rims on it, with a big W in the middle, so it did have caps, but it was too small, and stuff. The convertible also had the same rims.
I don't know if the decklid weighed quite THAT much (I helped hold it up for some people to take pics). The gas supports were dead on the trunk lid, providing no help in keeping it up, and I tapped on the rear wing, noting that it was SOLID, not hollow like the GT Fiero wings on our cars. It was probably a hand produced prototype piece that would have been hollow and a heck of a lot lighter once it reached production.
What made me sad, was seeing just how close this car was to production. Aside from a few small details to still be worked out (note the sloppy mount of the decklid release switches, I don't think they were sure of where they were going to finally mount them, and I couldn't find the power mirror contol anywhere when I was sitting in the car). This car was ready to go, and GM axed it.
As for those that say the styling looks "dated." Pictures don't do the car justice. All one had to do was look at the Acura NSX that was sitting in the hotel parking lot and note the similar design themes and the Acura is STILL in production (with a nice DOHC V6).

Oh yea, the mileage on the dash was almost 500, (I believe it was almost 496, but I'll have to get the pics from my camera to make sure).
And somebody was mentioning something about the rims. I don't believe that these ever ended up on another GM car, but they were on some of the other Fiero prototypes. They were 16-inch rims, 205 width in the front and 225 width in the back. And the car's power steering system was nice and functional...supposedly it only works at low speeds, turning itself off at driving speeds leaving you with the same steering feel the '88 rack gives you.

You guys think it looks like a firebird? Of course you are always gonna see simliarties between the two, especially being from the same company, but I always thought it looked more like an MR2 except with more aggressive looks. And as much as I like the GT body, I would still say it is good choice for an update the body. If you didn't like it, you can always buy the previous years. Also it's very similar to the MR2 when compared with what kind of jump the 80's made to the 90's version. And you know how much the 90's version run for nowadays...
They copied the design for the '90 from a car that came out in '93 back in '86? The fbodies look like the '90.. Most GM cars within a brand will look similar and have similar design cues.. take the split grill that most all Pontiac's have.

more likely that they designed the 90's f-bodies based on some drawings the guys had sitting around that were actually the fiero.. as i said if they had kept it going it probably would have been a huge hit
I personally would have wanted the older body style tho
