I am looking to do a SC3800 swap into my 86 GT. But I do not have access to a lift. I can get engine hoists and jacks, jackstands, ramps etc. Let me know what you all have done that works pretty good.

I just noticed you said you had access to a hoist... thats all you need!!!

Raise the car as high as you can with the jacks and secure it with jack stands. Attach the engine hoist to the engine. Hoist it up a little. Remove the cradle bolts and lower the cradle and engine down onto the legs of the hoist. Then disconnect the hoist from the engine and connect it to one of the strut tower holes on both sides of the car. Without the engine in the car, it is light enough to lift it with the engine hoist. Lift it until the height at the top of the wheel well is at 37" from the ground. Then secure it again with a pair of 6 ton jack stands. disconnect the hoist and roll the engine and cradle out the drivers side wheel well.

Easy as cake, just helped a friend do it like that last week.

Come-along held up by a Steel I beam across the garage rafters????

You can rent Cherry Pickers locally for a very low cost. Call around you might be surprised how low it is.

Thanks for the info. I wish we had steel beams, its just wooden rafters, that would work great.

If your garage is in good shape all you have to do is attach a 2 x 6 accross 4 rafters, this spreads the weight out accross the roof, then put a chain around the 2 x 6 and attach a hoist, I have a nice 2 ton from Harbor Freight $39. I have pulled cradles from 6 Fieros with this set up without a hitch. Total cost $50 for 2 x 6 hoist and steel straps to attach 2 x 6. Got hardware from Home Depot, took less than 1 hour to set up and have used it for 2 years. I have a ceiling in my gargage, so I let the hoist come down through the folding stairway.

Garage roof needs to be in good shape, 2 x 6 rafters, if only 2 x 4 you could probably use a longer 2 x 6 cross piece to spread the weight over a bigger area. Mine is probably over built but I wanted it to have a safety factor. I lift the car by removing rear bumper cover and attaching to the rear bumper support, I think this is better than using shock tower holes. It also lets me lift higher and lower car onto cradle with rear struts attached. Don't lose wheel alignment this way.

I lift the rear of the car with and without engines with no problem. I have a dolly I built special so the first lift is only a few inches just to get the dolly under the cradle, then take everything loose and lift car. If I am in a hurry it take 3 hours, but ususally no hurry so I spend 1/2 day.

DZ, that bumper point is a great idea, i didnt even think of that. Also my garage is 30 x 60, (i know, why dont i have a lift!) anyway it is a metal building with rafters that are 10ft spaced. Its like an open hanger i guess. but i was thinking to put 10ft boards from the ground up to it to prop it up to support that way but i think an engine hoist on the rear bumper support will do it especially with the cradle unbolted so its not lifting the engine weight.

Thanks again.
