I went to the wrecking yard the other day hoping to find a good used '88 clutch slave cylinder and found this instead:
The original seats are missing but as luck would have it I have a bolt of the original Indy leather. I can make a pair up if I can find some nice red material for the inserts. The wing and a few other odds and ends are missing but easy to replace. The original wheels are gone but I had a spare set of Fiero Rims I can paint and put new Indy tires on. BTW, yes, the Y82 code is present. It's real.
This is a rare Automatic model too. I've owned a 4-speed and seen dozens of manuals but this is the first auto I've seen. It has all the hard to find badges and horn button present too, although I've removed most of them when I took these pics for safe keeping.
Only 90K miles too!!! They dumped it because it wouldn't smog, can you believe it!?!?
I'll have this bad boy road worthy in NO TIME.
Total cost: $300 + $165 to tow it home.
Good deal? bad deal? Whatcha think?

One more thing, it's loaded. I stuck a battery in it and the power mirrors, windows, and stereo all work fine.
It needs a new headliner ($8, big deal), a bit of cleaning and some minor repairs but I figure I can have this thing looking like new for under $650 (paint job included!)
I'll post progress reports!

common misconception. It was written in an old issue of the Fiero News (Fiero Owner's Association). ever since then it has been taken as gospel. I did a little checking and it turns out that there were 67,671 Fiero SEs built in '84 (including the 2001 Indys made). Of these only 43.3% had Automatics.
I do not know exactly how many of these randomly selected SE models that were used to make the Indy's had sticks and autos but I imagine that the distibution was fairly random.
This, plus my own personal experience in seeing so many 4-speeds and so few autos makes me think the auto to be slightly rarer.
866 autos and 1135 4-speeds if the average holds true.

Yeah the rare 4-speed and rare automatic. Me personally have seen mostly 4-speeds. Ive seen on webpages that talk about the "rare Automatic" then other people here say the "rare 4-speed". Ive seen more manuals than autos so im saying autos are rarer

Todd, you son of a ***** ! How'd you get so lucky? That's in my neck of the woods, too. Nice find.
John,
Yeah, it was the 3rd of 5 wrecking yards I hit that day looking for a stupid slave cylinder. Could find one but I did manage to find a complete subwoofer system for $30 and this little gem.
I also found a FOCOA membership pin and a card from George Miller's shop in the car! That's what really surprised me. The owner must have known he could have sold the car for a descent price. Why wreck it out?
freak show.

As president of the club, I'm always getting calls from people who want to sell their cars. Why didn't they call me???
When it comes to master and slave cylinders, you might be better to just get a new one. I've heard that rebuilding them often doesn't work.

What is a Y82 Code, and where do you find it on the car? Thanks
If you open yur hood and look on the driver side front fender you will see a white sticker with the words "Service Parts Identification" on top with a bunch of 3 digit codes underneath.
These codes tell you what options the car came with from the factory. The Y82 code is the one that specifies that the car is a REAL Indy and not a fake or copy.
Other codes tell you about stereo options, power windows, AC, etc.
John,
Isn't your second Fiero a parts car? Think I'll keep this one.

Yes, it is, but do you think I would propose a trade straight-up, as is? It would depend on how badly you want a 4-speed. And yes, I would sweeten the pot with parts to even up the deal.

Just curious, where's the wing? Does it have holes in the decklid where someone swiped it? Does it now have a salveage title?
Great find! Sean
I did a carfax on it and the title was clean. The only thing worth noting was that the previous owner failed two smog tests at some point.
The car was checked into the Wrecking yard on 9-24-02 (over 2 months ago). Since then A few parts were stripped off it like the wing (the holes are there), the seats, one headlight assembly, and a few odds and ends.
With the exception of the original seats, the rest is pretty easy to replace.
This week I started cleaning it (job 1). After that I need to swap in a new ignition cylinder with a key so I can evaluate the electrics fully and whip-up a punch list of necessary repairs.
I'll keep you posted.

I know Ray Paulk is doing an Indy Registry. Is he your Dad's friend? Don't see the need to do two of them. And I think you mean RPO code, not ROP. It's Y82. And all Indy's came with a wing. It was standard equip. The code for that is D80 (i think).

That is correct he is a friend of my dads and thats right rpo not rop hehe and I know the y82 but the rop is a different code which can tell you if it was a standard or an automatic and a bunch of other things. I'm just trying to help out you and him any way I can cuz I love the fiero. Can't wait to see it restored ace

rare 4 speed RPO-mm4 rare auto RPO-mm1 according to the Fiero Spotter's Guide book by Mark Corbin first edition 1991 in 1984 there were 134,585 Fieros built with 76,848 4 speed and 57,737 auto.so I would guess that there were 571 4 speed Indys with 429 auto Indys plus or minus a couple. Hope this helps on Rare.
Hey Todd , great save . Saveing an 84 Indy is definetely worth a positive rateing . Best of Luck with your Indy project .
Note : I had a terrible time trying to get my 85 Sport Coupe to pass emissions , when I first moved down here to Florida . Finally in desperation I had a new Cat installed , drove the Fiero for about an hour ,then went straight down to the emissions station the same day and passed the damn emissions test .This was after the Fiero had failed the emission test three times .Also , this was on a brand new rebuilt engine with less than 300 miles on it .If the Fiero din't pass on it's fouth try I would then have to try to get some sort of wavier .Thank the Fiero Gods that the state of Florida did away with the emission testing a couple of years ago .

Well the holidays and the rains have slowed progress but here is the latest.
I decided to start with the interior. I replaced the headliner ($8.95 in material), cleaned the trim. Pulled out the carpets and pressure washed them with a degreaser, Patched a hole in the floor and used carpet tape to mend a few tears. I used a beard and mustache trimmer to clean-up the lint-balls. the carpets look like new!
I took out all the switches and have dis-assemble them for cleaning. Most are savable but two are headed for the trash. Need a new driver PW and a new TR switch. I'll scout the wrecking yards soon. I replaced the center console and cleaned everything inside and out.
I'll have pics up as soon as I finish (end of the week)
you got lucky on that one ,good to see that it will be saved,my Indy 4speed cost me 250$ so i know how you feel to find a good deal, maybe when she is done we can meet and take pics of both of our cars, that is if the cali fieros can actually get together. 84 Indy 4 speed (stole it) 250$ 86 GT rebuilt 89 WS6GTA 350 TPI T-TOP

Well, the interior is almost fully restored. Have a look! Notice the new Cruise control stalk. I had to replace the cylinder lock, stereo, and seats. I patched the carpet and cleaned it out of the car before putting it all back in. A new headliner, leather sun visors, and switches complete the resto. I found some map pockets in the wrecking yard and will add them soon too.
