I had a thought.. Why not organize a cross country race! Who would at all be interested in this? I was having a debate.. either start in Canada and race across canada, or start in america and race across canada.. I would make it for 1.5-2 years from now, to give me plenty of prep time (plus the stang has to be ready, obviously) ANd everyone could throw in a specified amount of money to enter.. Which would go to the winner.. I think I'm going to go ahead with this anyways, just wondering if anyone from here would be interested.. (now to get a domain name, while keeping it under wraps)..

They had a cannonball run in Australia a few years back in the Northern Territory due to no speed limits in that state outside of towns. Needless to say a Japanese driver in an F40 wiped out on a corner taking out a car load of marshalls killing himself and them.

Too many cars and too many lawyers. It just won't work anymore. Sad but true. Might try the Silver State Challange in Nevada. It is as close as you can get anymore.

Those aren't RACES though (What IS the gumball anyways.. it's not a race I don't think.. is i tjust driving around together partying?.. Is there a point in coming in 1st.. prize?).. I want to have a simple race.. no parties, no checkpoints.. Everyone pays in.. Gets a destination. tkaes off (all to the same destination).. They plan their own routes.. they try their own shortcuts, etc.. I have to make it legal.. I believe i heard if i say they have to make it no earlier than a specified time, it becomes legal.. (and obviously don't use the word race).. and find a way to express the prize, legally.. Canada or america? If it's in canada.. It's being called The Snowball..
Actually the Gumball is a race sort of. They don't race in the way that the original Cannonball was run. There's no timed run or prize it's just driving across the country. However, most speed to the extreme! You can see the Gumball race if you get the movie Mischeif 3000 you can see the entire race. I believe it was the 2000 or 2001 race that's in there. I prefer the original idea as Johnny does but Gumball is the closest thing now. Although, there is some good stuff that happens in that video. It's definitely worth watching for inspiration at least. They really do move, one of the cars was nailed for 150+! If you were going to do a real Cannonball like it was originally done, then you'd have to do it secretly for sure. Interesting side note is that the Cannonball was run for many years and only ONE team crashed. It was the all womens team. You can read about the real Cannonball Run in the book by Brock Yates, who started it, right now. It's available from Car and Driver toll free; 1-800-914-5656 for $24.95 for the unsigned book and $34.95 for the signed book. I have it and it's a great read. Some really unbelievable things actually happened. If you've seen the movie Cannonball run, you saw the guys dressed as preists and the ambulance. Well, Brock was one of the guys dressed as paramedics and the van used in the movie was the actual van they used. Another team actually did dress as preists and were refered as "the flying fathers." The ambulance trick actually did work, it got Brock and his partner out of a stop by the cops. lol Not that i'm into this of course. lol

Even though the Gumball isnt a race in the sense that cannonball was, to me it is just as good. The competition isnt what makes it fun, I mean, what you are going to win, most likely wont be worth the amount of your tickets The cars, the speed, the women, the partying, the excitement... too me that would be worth more than any prize, even if the prize was my dream car (360 modena)

well this prize was just going to be the combined entry fees of all participents (i dunno.. $300-$500.. quite appealing compared to the other 10k entry fees I've seen.. I think i will talk to a lawyer this week and see if we can figure something out.. But how many people WOULD be interested if i got this going?

I also recomend the Cannonball book it's great. You find out the movie is more true than you think. The Cannonball stopped at work in last years race and I now proudly wear my Cannonball hat when driving my Fiero.

Thats a long drive. many people will say they are up for it, but once the first day of holding 4000+ rpms for 10 hours we will see. having just drove back from virginia back home to detroit at pretty heavy speeds, I know cross country is not gonna happen for me. as much as I'd love to try, I know me & my car would not make it. I like more the "mischief 3000" style, or rally style, timed from checkpiont to checkpoint. just all out no rules NY to LA is crazy (tho sounds soooo much fun). how about a blue ridge parkway run?

it isn't really about getting there first, it's about the trip. i personally think gumball is the way to go. they say it's not a race, and technically it's not because the first one there dosen't get a prize, but trust me, people act it like a race. it's just a shame to put so many miles on those nice cars. the mischeif video is good.
but the gumball is out of range for people.. distance and especially money wise (10k approx to enter).. this would be basically a simple, simple race.. Start to finish, no holds barred.. I made the drive to kansas and back without really sleeping (50 hours), so I know i'm up for this.. (Unfortunately, if i organized it, i couldn't win).. but it will be fun.. I have to buy a domain name this week.. and actually figure out WHEN is a reasonable date.
Mischeif is crazy, even without the big entry fee, you'd better be ready to pay big for the tickets and or repaires, I know I wouldn't be going all out, I'd just do it for the fun!
I always wanted to do like "jackpot" race from somewhere across Texas like from San Antonio to Dallas just on one highway or the driver's choice of travel. First one to point "B" wins !! Done. Have the entry fee be like $500 so there is enough money to pay for a ticket if you do win, and have a "hard-luck" donation pot to the person that gets the most tickets on the trip. The whole race would be over in about 4-5 hours so what's the big deal ? I don't know WHY any of my friends won't do this. It's not that hard to organize.
