Ok I have looking all around for rims/wheel covers to match the original Indy. I may have come up with something. All I need now is a drill press, a sharp bit and a lot of patience. Any thoughts?

Wow, those look like they may turn out to be very close in appearance. Like you said, lots of work with the drill, but I think the results will be worth it.

Just noticed you're from Wooster. Small world, I have an uncle who works for the city of Wooster .

Are you thinking of selling them, or are they just for your Indy? Where did you get those caps? What size and make of rim?

Yes, they were caps, I believe they were caps on alloy rims. I'd have to look at pics from the 20th but do remember they are caps.

The origionals are indeed wheel caps. approx 3/16 - 1/4" thick dome of polished aluminum on a 16" (X 8?) rivited centerline wheel painted black. Thats about all I know. I am looking for ways to make them too. All I have to say is: a milling machine with a rotary indexing table, or CNC. The hardest part I think is getting the dome shaped aluminum disks. Ive been debaiting how to go about this for years.

just get thw wheels from a 85 dodge shelby they are identical and will bult right on and are in 2 sizes 15 and 16 on the 87

ps you will have to polish them as the shelby wheels are satin finished

ohioindy

by the way you need to punch the holes stainless steel dont like drills when it is as thin as those caps

The Shelby rims have MANY differences from the actual Centerline Indy pace car rims. Hole size/number/placement... however, it's the closest readily-available wheel that's currently available, so people have used them to 'get by' with.

I think these wheelcovers are a great idea, and could be made to appear much more accurate to the Centerlines than the Shelby wheels do.

Got a supplier/part number for these?

I'll give you all the info as to where I found them after mine have been shiped. I will tell you that with shipping they are less that $100.00 for a set of 4. If anyone has any specs. on the orginal wheels (size of holes) that would be helpful. I'm just going to order the covers in 14" and go to the bone yard and get some rims that will fit the car and the caps. I know the orginal Indy had larger rims but my tires are all but new and I really don't want to spend money on new tires.

Here is the web site where I found these hub caps.
I received mine within 3 days (I was impressed)
They only take Paypal.
Now I have to drill them.

This is what the Daytona rims look like on an Indy:

They look great on an Indy but are not exact as you can see.
I for one would be very interested in obtaining a set like you are describing in this thread
that were made even closer in appearance to the actual rims if they were ever made available.
Keep us updated on your progress. You may motivate the rest of us
