Flow problem aside, the problem I'd be afraid of is think of the exhaust path there and what it will hit. NOTHING likes a sharp 90° turn at high velocities and it will attempt to go straight. Hitting the back side of your pipe will really push the temperatures way up and shorten the life of that pipe. Make sure nothings behind that area that you don't want melted WHEN (not if) it finally fails.
Other than that, you're doing a great job and it's a very clean install. My hat's off to you.
Oh, as far as the oil filter goes, I wouldn't mount mine like that simply because I like to prefill them at oil changes. You're not going to be able to with a horizontal filter. I know a lot of factory cars do it that way, and they seem to work, but that doesn't mean I have to like them.
John Stricker
Thanks John,
I talked to a few and we kind of agreed that there would be some scavanging? Don't know if it really fits here, from the other bank that will suck the exhaust toward the muffler anyway. Yes, I know its not the "ideal" configuration. Its hard when your piecing together from premade bends to begin with. I think it will be ok for the time being. If it seems to pose probs I'll redo it. I am getting it ceramic coated, probably with the Jethot 2000 to help with the temp and longevity of the pipe.

Hey Rob, lookin' good! If you run into problems, you may want to lay a bend into that 2-into-1, 'peaks' in the stream are never good (build up heat, hot gasses, etc.)
But just jet-hot it and drive her I say, you can always get a TIG welder and use 304 stainless later if you feel the tickle.
Best! Ben.

Well, here's the finished exhaust. It's out to jethot for their Sterling finish along with the WCF Flowmaster 40 series muffler. All mandrel bent 2 1/2" tubing. Should sound SHWEEEEET!

Do you have a pic of the set up in the car (muffler & exhaust)?
Wanna see how it is routed.
John
I've routed it to maintain the muffler in the stock location. Here are a few pics of it installed on the motor.
Well, I've been extremely busy the last few months. My job is slowly coming to an end (this coming Friday) so there will be a lot of progress on my transplant in the next couple of weeks so Stay Tuned!

Well, things never work like they're supposed to..Here are some pics of what I was up against the last couple of months...
Nothing like 12" of snow to make your day..
Couple of days later -you guessed it...more freaking snow.
Went on my trip to MD got back to find that all the snow iced up on the roof of my portable garage. I'd have to say there was aout 1000 pounds of ice in the tarp. Needless to say this happened trying to deice.
I got a little ticked at the last ice episode I had so I took a few days to cool off. So did the weather. Sub zero wind chill. I had to get all the ice up between the garages.
The hard way...
The easy way...used my pneumatic hammer. It was so cold that the regulator on the compressor didn't work. I had to heat the compressor up with a small kerosene heater.

It's been in the teens and below for a week now. Today was the first warmer (36 degrees). I got these to warm the garages. Boy the big one kicks out some heat!
This one keeps my drafty ass barn garage nice and warm.
and this for the portable...
So now its time to work...

Ok, on to the progress. When I did the test fit, I found that I needed about a 1/4 inch to clear the frame rail. The Milodon timing set came with the cover, which is about 1/4 inch thicker then stock. I also wanted to be able to change my belt without dropping the motor.
Cut the frame rail out.
Welded the reinforcment back in. The notch is 1 inch deep.
While I was welding, my son removed the engine blower and ducting.
and Elvira removed my shifter cables and my shifter.
The cables are being replaced and the shifter is getting the Rodney Dickman rebuild.
More as I progress.

Installed the o2 sensor and wrapped the oil lines in thermotec tape to keep them cool.
Installed the distro and routed and loomed spark plug wires. The setup I used was modified slightly because of the two piece valve covers. Distributor will come out one more time so I can prelube the motor.
Have to order a set of Accel shorty header spark plugs. Can you say NO room.
Installed the engine management wiring harness.
Loads of thanks to my wife Elvira for the helping hand! I'm pretty fortunate
yes my thoughts all so, this was my first read and you are doing a great job ,i'm hoping to start mine in spring as i may keep mine off the road this year

Sure I can say it, "No room." So, what caused the spark plug to alternator interference? Would you mind sharing a little more info on how it could be avoided, other than using different plugs, if one were to take the time to modify bracketry? Thanks, this thread is awesome, tons of info and pictures!

Its the blck paint he painted his cradle with. Its rustproof, infact you can paint right over rust with it and it will stop it. Not sure on the price but i its pretty expensive though

$Rich$, go to www.por-15.com and you'll find all the information you want on it. I've got a guy local to me that sells it, and I'm going to get some to paint my battery tray with. Great stuff!

I'm using some on the rear frame rails, and the areas under the front and rear fascias. It's pretty neat stuff.

Jelousy is Every mans Weekness!! looks like you 2 are doing a superjob, im planning my V8 in the near future, but the suspension comes first
i just read the entire thread for the first time
i really like the valve covers
i suppose you wouldnt wanna share how much $$ you got tied up in this project would ya?

Hi Rich,
Thanks for the kind words. The valve covers were a lucky score. They don't make them anymore.
As for how much I have tied up in the swap...more then I care to mention right now. I'll total it all up when I'm done. It wasn't cheap since I spared no expense. I want it right the first time.
The por-15 is, as others have mentioned, is a coating that prevents rust. It's kinda like a paint. The tranny was coated in the silver and the cradle was done in the black. There's more involved in the application then just painting over rust. To apply it properly is a three step process. Degrease, etch the metal and paint. You can check out the costs at the site that was mentioned earlier. The coating spreads well so a small can goes a long way. I normally buy the kits which come with the degreaser, etcher and the por-15. Hope this helps..

Sorry Bryce, must have missed this post.
You can probably get a bigger belt and swing the alternator out another inch. I think there is about an inch and a half of adjustment space left. That would put the alternator close to the firewall. I'm getting the shortie plugs instead.

Did my shifter rebuild today. Got to say, Rodney's kits are very precise. I was able to get ALL the play out of the shifter. This along with his getrag shift kit and new cables should work nicely.
The shifter, nice and rusty...
Disassembled and painted.
The rebuild kit. Has shims, new oilite bushings to replace the cheap plastic and a few other parts.
Kit installed
All done
I recommend this kit to anyone that's trying to take the slop out of their shifter.

I did the Rodney Rebuild (actually Shawn Salyers did it for me...I kinda of watched) as well. The shifter is very precise when your done...
The only problem we had was the spring. When we pulled it out the spring was simply laying there. We couldn't figure a way to get it back on properly, so we left it out. Shifter feels fine without it.
Anyone know what it does?

I am trying to find out how much gap is left once the enging is in for lid to carb clearance. Want to use a single plane on my V8, but may concerned about getting it to fit without cutting the lid.
Great attention to detail.

Yes, I did the test fit a while ago. That's when I found that I have to notch the frame rail. Didn't check for hood clearances but it looked like it would clear. I'm pretty sure I posted pics earlier in the thread.
I got some more done in the last couple of days. Not physically, but design work. I designed my cooling and fuel system and ordered all the parts. All hoses for cooling and fuel are getting the stainless braided treatment complete with AN fittings. Not cheap but well worth the investment in piece of mind.
Gotta go and attend to some more of that white $hit falling from the sky....UGH!!!
