hey, we have a 92 subaru legacy here, thats pretty much on its last legs(engine runs pretty well, just the rest of the car is about to go, suspension, body, etc), and i looked it up, it has this in it:

4 cylinder, 2.2 liter 16 valve, Overhead Cam Boxer engine with Sequential Multi-port fuel injection, 130 hp @ 5600 rpm, torque 137@4400 rpm, Distributorless electronic ignition.

ive driven this car for a while, and its a blast to drive and just has tonnes of power(well as far as ive driven cars so far, which isnt much), at least as compared to my fiero. i was curious, being that this engine IS fwd(and automatic to boot, as is my 84 fiero, ew) would it be possible to fit this engine in my fiero? i havent done any measuring, but it 'looks' like it would fit, and might be an interesting swap should i be able to pull it off.

of course, ANYTHING is possible, but im just curious if this might be a viable option(if of course i rebuilt the subaru's engine)

comments? tips? thanks a bunch.

Your Legacy is only FWD? That's kind of rare itself!

As for the 2.2 Boxer... it's a good motor, but it sits longitudally and is a little large (wide) because of it's boxer layout - so you'd have to take the entire drivetrain at minimum. Sounds like an extreme amount of work, especially for something slightly less in power to a stock V6.

i drive an AWD subaru and the awd setup wouldn't - but i have yet to see one of the older FWD transmissions - if it DOES fit then i would say use that transmission with a wrx or bigger engine... mine has the 2.5L dohc engine with 165hp and it does pretty well..

a huge advantage to use a subaru FLAT engine would be it would lower the CG of the fiero even more.. i'd love to see this swap done

simply imagine an STI engine swap into a fiero *DROOL*

up till a certain year all the base models of legacy forester imprezza etc were FWD

Being that it's a jap 4 cyl, i would be willing to bet that there are numerous turbo kits available for this motor. like mentioned above, it'll be a wide engine, but you will be able to mount in so low and far forward in the chassis, that handling will be greatly improved. If it were possible though i do something like this but using a porsche Boxster S flat Six. but the subaru engine would be pretty neat too. if you think you can do it, go for it.

subaru flat 4's are only about 16" long and 24-36" wide --
a porsche engine will be too long and you'd have to use a 914 transmission or reverse the dif on a 911 one

using a subaru fwd trans you could most likely mount any 4cyl subaru engine in the fiero and gain agility
anything either NA 2.5 or 2.0 turbo and up will gain you some speed over a stock fiero

there are turbo kits for all the engines but is generally cheaper ot just buy a used turbo engine

nah dont worry, theres a whole dealership full of them(i think they even have the sti variant, not sure) not too far away from my house.. wonder if theyd notice an engine missing from one of their cars.. ;-)

i think i may try this once the subaru is done for, and i have another fiero so i can drive one, work on the other, tho this would be a great winter project(we have heavy winters here, lotta 'stuck inside' time to work on it..)! i may just try it, just for the hell of it.

i wonder if the dash would fit? ....this could be a fun swap, if only for the fact that noone else has done it.

Good pics what year is yours? I only wish I could've found one simliar to mine with a lighter paint job as the black-on-black gets pretty warm here. But it was the only one I could find locally with low miles and a 5 speed (the autos are a bit anemic).

I know a guy who put a subaru 1600 into his old beetle, converted it to carb and put a radiator in the front...It goes real fast. A wrx turbo engine would be really nice in a Fiero!

I know you can make my wife's old car (2001 Subaru Legacy GT wagon) run in FWD only by pulling a fuse. The rear drive is engaged by a viscous coupler that only engages when needed, you know, from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip.

It's for sale if anybody is interested.

My dad owns a 97 SVX. I would really like to see his 3.3L H6 in a Fiero...especially with a turbo kit.

I also drive a subaru. It is my wifes car an 88gl wagon 4wd its just a 1.8 ea82 not a lot of power but the Duel range 5 sp trans is matched perfectly to the engine. I am impressed with how it runs with over 223000 miles on it.

I also drive suburu as my daily trasportation, mine is a 90 wgn with 112k and my wife drives a 91 with 189k she loves that thing and will not give it up. I have pulled pushed so many cars with them and they are still going strong. Hey 4wd and 27mpg you can't beat that. what I like the most is the heat and ac is instant.Every time I went to the store get some parts, they will ask me if it is turbo, that leads me to beleive that there were turbo versions from the factory as well.

I also have a Fiero and 2 Subaru's. A 88 GT T-Top, a 02 WRX & a 04 Legacy 35th Annviersary Edition.

Pics of both can be found in the Thread : https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/039435.html

Of course if I was to do a Subaru Motor swap into a Fiero, I would go with a 2.2 Stroked WRX motor with a nice VF 22 Turbo, that should get you somewhere around 400 HP
