doublec4,
The design of the vent doesn't mean anything - just an opening to let the air flow through the radiator
without weakening the hood too much or intruding into the driver's vision. You guys have good ideas,
any suggestions for a different look?
Fastback 86,
The cluster is from the '98 transam engine donor car. I bent (very carefully) the bottom of the bezel
towards the cluster using a heat gun and clamps. The cowl is made of (don't laugh) upholstery cardboard
which I softened in water to form and then, after it dried, "plastized" with 2 coats of polyester resin -
quick and dirty, but it works.
RCR,
About building the male mold (plug): There are different ways using various materials to do it. Computer
Aided Design is wonderful, but at my age (old) its learning curve is too steep, I don't have 2 years or
more to spend studying it. Instead, I get an idea of a look I like, I'm not original, I just synthesize, and
build it directly on the part of the car I'm modifying. I cut stations/profiles out of cardboard or 1/8"
plywood, position them and fasten them in place with hot melt glue. Then I fill in between with 1 1/2"
thick polyisocyanurate insulation foam. As I work, I begin to see if I like the shape I'm getting and, if
necessary, change it from side to side accordingly, using templates and doing lots of measuring. After I
get close with the foam/cardboard/plywood, I finish the shape with setting drywall joint compound and
several coats of catalyzed sanding primer.
As for laying up the fiberglass for the female molds and finished parts, there's a wealth of information
at fiberlay.com and at fiberglast.com. I'll only say that it's godawfull hard and messy work.
