I guess that the last I checked a new wheel went for 200 plus.. I have the grey one... The time it would take to negotiate a sall and purchase would be way longet that a die / paint job.. but I guess you might be right if it takes alot of time or cost alot....
any other thoughts..

Keep in mind that the leather wrapped Fiero steering wheels (and probably others) are notorious for coming loose. The glue under the leather gives out. This causes the leather to twist and the glue (about the consistency of tar) to seep out onto your hands. You really might want to consider having the wheel reupholstered or go for one of the many aftermarket wheels. True that some of them (Momo is a good example) are outrageously priced but I had a nice Grant (fake leather but you couldn't tell) in my last Fiero and I think it looked great. Same basic design as the GT wheel and I only paid around $60 for it.

Or you can go to autozone or advance auto parts store and purchase a black leather steering wrap for about $10 bucks. It'll take an hour, but it will be leather and black... Another option is tp purchase one from wheelskinz.com or wheelskins.com for about $30... Go for the $10 type at the parts store, just as good as others for less...
another thing you could try is what I do to my Corvette. Use the liquid 'scuff coat' leather shoe polish. Makes my wheel and shifter knob look brand new for months. Ez to do a quick touch up if you have to. Be careful with it, it will stain permanently if you get it on carpet or seats too. It dont come off on my hands either.
