I was just looking back through the thread while on my rating spree...
...and I did the math here. A 5.25" round speaker should have about two thirds the surface area of a 4x10. There are two differences, as far as I personally know: 1. There are a lot more 5.25" options than there are 4x10s. 2. Round speakers reproduce sound more accurately - enough to be worth the surface area lost in this case, I personally would guess.
Since I'm looking at doing a 5.25" and 4" side by side, I'll end up with, overall, a bit more surface area than with a 4x10. This doesn't mean much since it is spread across two speakers, and therefore there will be no benefit in the form of bass - but, with my particular setup, that's ok, since I'm looking to get more power to the middle and high frequencies.
