it wasnt set so, when i go to put in an aftermarket deck and i purchace the harness, there will be a harness to wire this into my aftermarket deck?
i know you need a module to make the wheel controls work with an aftermarket deck, but the HUD and stull will be OK?

On my GM cassette deck from a Grand Prix that plug is what I connected my Delco CD changer to. I can control the CD changer with the buttons on the radio. I don't think bubba is right on this one. I think on your radio it can control a remote cassette player.

Ski is absolutely right on this one. I have an OEM CD head unit from a 2002 in my '96 JImmy. That's what the harness for my OEM slave cassette plugs into. One of the plugs in the group of 4 is what the steering wheel controls plug into.

Over the year that plug has done many things... It can control a remote cassette deck and later it was used to control CD Changers. On my 97 Trans Am I ordered the CD changer and the CD deck and they plugged the CD changer into that connector and it wouldn't work. In 97 the connector was only there for remote cassette deck. Later the CD deck could control CD changers and remote cassette deck. I'm not sure how much later.
Steering wheel controls do not go through that connector, it is a single wire in the main connector. It's analog and works of a set of resistors in the steering wheel.
I don't understand the comment about HUD that has nothing to do with Steering wheel controls or the radio.
Also the anti-theft is pretty easy to overcome. Five minutes of searching the PFF archive revealed an 800 number you can call and tell them a code off the radio and the automated system gives you the unlock code. I had to do that when I installed my radio in my GT.
There are probably a nearly infinite number of combinations of functions for that connector. Unless you know exactly which radio you have and what car it came from it's pure guesswork.

Couple of you got it right. In the case of the HU being a CD player, that plug serves as the connection for a remote tape deck. For a HU that has a tape deck in it, the plug serves as a connection for a CD changer. I know this because I've been researching it on the internet, I'm going to use that plug as a connection for my XM radio install.

You got it mostly right. After about 98 the CD head units could also control CD changers as well as remote cassette decks. I have an adapter that converts that plug into an aux input. I'm using that for DVD now and will have XM shortly.
Regarding XM, has anyone used the magnet mount antenna? I wonder how well it works stuck to SMC?

I have a magnet mount antenna double sided taped to the roof of my 86 GT. I get 3 bars of reception most everywhere, and it only drops when I'm in a drivethru of some sort, it works fine in my garage, etc.

Where did you get your adapter from? I'm probably going to use the one from www.pie.net
I'm going to experiment with putting the antenna under the front hood. Some of the Camaro guys with fiberglass hoods have done this and get good reception.

Yep, that's the one I have, (GM9 aux). It works great. If you hook up the steering wheel controls it's pretty cool to be able to kick on your XM without taking the hands off the wheel.
The only catch is depending on the radio, you get the aux inputs and can still conncect a changer, while the older radios you can only get the aux inputs.
Radios from 2001 and newer can talk to CD changers and remote cassette decks can have aux inputs and still talk to a changer. Either way you get crisp direct inputs compared to crappy FM modulator sound.

Good to hear. I wasn't sure about which CD players would work so I got one of the tape decks. I have a CD player that I bought from kru should I want to go back to CD's. But with XM I see no need for CD's anytime soon.
