Funny thing about notchies vs. fastbacks - my "finished" fastback doesn't generally draw the same comments that Eric (racingman24's) somewhat-beat-up '88 coupe gets from casual observers. Some of it is probably the color (his is red), some of it may be the wheels (he's running 17s, I'm still running stock wheels until my last custom one arrives)... but still - it's just a wierd thing!
its all about the wheels. lets see who gets more stares when they are both done! actually, that will be close i think

notchies are more obviously fieros - the fastbacks tend to blend in more
if you want kids asking you about your ferrari - and import fans complimenting you then get a fastback - if you want something that stands out that you have to constantly defend from the the ignorant then get a notchy
If we could just get someone out there to make a kit of this body style, we could have a car that fits both tastes. We could call it a "Half Back" or a "Semi Fast"

Funny part is that it is true. That should change over the winter. Just a few weeks ago, myself and Rob were washing our cars and I was right behind him. The owner of the carwash comes up to me, and says something to the effect of, "Wow, That's still in really good condition considering the age, very nice. You should be proud." Something like that. And I'm just sitting there going. . . .ummm . .. .do you see Rob's car parked less than 2 feet in front of mine
O well, I guess my car just looks better.

Wait. . . Did I just say I can't wait to do more work on my Fiero?. . .what, am I retarded?
how is that a halfback? its a fastback with a lip spoiler and fenders flared into the spoiler.. not even close to a notchy
a halfback is what the perpule pavement eater is - and what one other member of the forum is working on fasback lights with notchy sails
Take a look at this photo of another one of the PPG cars. This is not a normal F/B. The roof line is in between a Notchie and a Fastback, hence me calling it a Half Back

LOL - yeah, I know that the wheels alone play a big part... it's just that I've always found the "what people see" when the look at the cars - to be so strange

Yeah, that's pretty much the "incident" that I was thinking of - also, I used to always get "cool car" comments in the rattlecan-black-primer '88 Coupe - but not so much in the GreenGT - LOL... I figure the color itself just doesn't catch people's eyes so much...

Hmmm... you probably need to go put your contacts back in

He's technically right - the PPG "fastbacks" were actually built on Notchie cars (as noted by the notchie taillights, and the ribbed moldings all the way 'round). I've always really liked this body style quite a bit!

The owner of this one is Fiero Doc. Yeah, it's got the N*.
Side note - From what I understand, the side scoops were factory made but never made it to the market.
As to the topic, I've been fortunate to have owned both. As looks go, I think they are both equal in different ways. Just depends on what you are trying to accomplish.
For practical reasons, when you have to work on the forward side of the motor in a fastback, that pillar does get in the way and climbing in and out of the trunk gets old real quick (especially for us 30 something guys). Also, there is a bit of a blind spot with the fastback, only it's not so much a blind spot as it is in the way when you are trying to get a quick look and you have to lean or slouch just to change lanes.
IMO

WTF? so the only one you like is FieRo's custom shorty nose? or maybe the jalepeno is more your taste?
Yes, I do like his nose, as the overhand on the Fiero is too much, but that's not what I meant. The entire front end (read: hood) is too long for a mid-engine car. They should've took 6" off the front (most of it from in front of the wheels) and put it behind the passenger compartment. You know, closer to the layout of a Lamborghini instead of a Viper.

Here's my opinion. I go either way depending on how the car is customized. But the Fastback looks HEAVIER and the body style looks like it is not a handler, but looks faster in a straight line. The GT quarter windows, while great looking, but they are really quirky. Try explaining them to someone. I mean, they are just for looks and I have not seen any other car with anything like them. Also, my GT gets noticed, but confused for another car more often then Lildevils. ALSO, I am constantly being asked where did I get the body kit?!?!?!? Alot of people think my car has some sort of a kit. The Notchback looks like a handler and looks lighter(i know it is). It is NEVER confused for any other car and people know its a FIERO.

I agree. I like the long hood in general, but the Fiero nose is way too long. That forces it to take that upward bend just so it doesn't scrape the ground. Chin spoilers help but the real solution is a nose job.
I like both. Notchbacks have more of a blindspot and fastbacks look a little more modern in my opinion. I say just go with what you'd rather have right now. You can always get another.

I'm still trying to convince him to make me one if i get time i may try my hand at copying him
wow, a lot of beautiful cars here, but im still not convinced to keep my car as a notchy, too bad there arnt quick conversion kits so you can swap clips depending on your mood. Lets see some more pics, especially of Ed Parks son's car.

NOT CONVINCED YETT??? I think you are just anit-notchy. After the plethera of examples everyone posted (thanks Koburn + for u )
Maybe you should slap some rims on her and lower her THEN make your choice. You dont like it, slap that stuff on a Fastback.
give the notchy a chance at least.
I passed on many notchys before I got my 85. I have 4 Fastbacks, so as you can see I WAS VERY ANTI-NOTCHY.
