I have the stuff to do a fastback swap onto my 86 se aero notchy. Convince me to either do it or stick with what i have, the car is red with black gfx and has a stock wing on it. Im concerned about working on the engine with the extra sail panels in the way if I do the conversion.
I personally like the notchies... but the fastbacks aren't bad either. From looking at Chester's fleet of fast backs, I don't see a problem with doing minor stuff on the engine (top end stuff).
Just think about this, for anything major, you're gonna pull the engine and work on it outside the car anyway.

Go with BOTH! I was gonna do a fastback conversion on my 84 but then found a GT for a good deal and now I have both and love them both for there own reasons.

Notchback fieros look a bit more exotic and stand out a little more.
I like the fastbacks, myself. Smooth lookin'!

Look at Skitime's GT or any other fastback and compare it to the best looking notchback (I.E. spddy's). Fastbacks are more exotic but notchbacks do have their own appeal. Notchbacks are unique where-as the fastback looks similar to a mkII MR2, 300zx, heck even a CRX... more of an import look. Exotic in the sense fastbacks look really really really similar to a Ferrari 355 or a 428.

Let me add to that list (in my opinion) the rounder Probes, even Eclipses... but ditto.
I just think the notchbacks are more interesting looking, more noticable. The cars that they look similar too are rarer cars than the ones the fastbacks resemble. Ask someone you know who doesn't know anything to quickly glance at a pic or each, see which one they double take.
On the other hand, you already have the nose, might as well go for the butt too...

You didn't show my whole quote where I list the fastback as being the most similar looking to the Ferrari 355 and 348
I have owned both fastback and notchback, and I'm a Fiero owner and like all of you I like both. But really ask anyone on the street that know nothing about Fieros and they'll prefer fastbacks for it's more modern exotic look.
Dude.. Notchies are SOO much easier to work on. I'll race anyone with a fastback in a V6 rear spark plug and manifold swap with my notchie. Theres no way a fastback driver will be able to beat my notchie and I. Besides, adding to the pictures:

Replying to previous post heh, if you care about what others think, the Fiero isn't the best car out there then. Fiero is a pride thing that you personally have to love, there's so much bad rumors and reputation out there. A car that's for fitting with the "in-crowed" would be a s13 240sx or a 80s FC rx-7, both affordable and both really popular. The Fiero, most people you meet will be ignorant about it.
BTW I've changed plugs on both a fastback and notchback, they were the same to me... simple. I just stand in the trunk, put a cloth over the plenum, and lay on it.

PS: I like notchies, too (esp. 88 Formulas) but I like fastbacks better :-)

I like both, go with what makes you happy. One of these days I'll have a Fastback. Remember that a F/B clip will make your car heavier and a little harder to work on the motor (so I'm told by my F/B friends). Each time a N/B becomes a F/B it makes us Notchie owners smile as ours become more rare

It's all about personal preference... which do you prefer?
Personally I've always thought that "Aero Notchies" were the best representation of a "Fiero" (I always wanted an '85GT). But the fastbacks are more modern looking (doesn't appear to be quite as "80's" as the notchbacks).
Funny thing about notchies vs. fastbacks - my "finished" fastback doesn't generally draw the same comments that Eric (racingman24's) somewhat-beat-up '88 coupe gets from casual observers. Some of it is probably the color (his is red), some of it may be the wheels (he's running 17s, I'm still running stock wheels until my last custom one arrives)... but still - it's just a wierd thing!
I've always like the notchback better. I'll probably get flamed for this, but I think the side profile of the fastback is just too close to a lot of other cars on the road these days. It isn't until you come around the car, that you realise they are side panels. They've always reminded me of the rear-side windows on both my 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse (Eagle Talon for us Canadians) or my 1980 Chev Monza. I'll supply pics if necessary.
you could be REALLY differnt and do one side fastback and the other notchie!!! or get the fastback tail lights and keep the notchie clip. or the notchie tail lights and the fastback clip....
i like the fastbacks better for going crazy on with scoops and body kit pieces because it has a square front end but a bubble butt thats all rounded off.... and the notchie looks cleaner because its square everywhere and for some reason they have always looked lower/longer than the fastbacks to me. if it were up to me i would get a notchie the next time i get another fiero just for the weight savings and because i hate working on my motor!
Altho I don't have a Fiero yet, I love these types of threads, I get to look at all the pretty cars, gives me lots of cosmetic ideas for my own, eventually.
