Is anybody interested in running an All-Fiero track event and drag night again this year?

Keep in mind that CFOGi has not planned a track day this year - so mark the weekend of July 16 and 17 on your calendar right now so that you won't miss out. This event will be sponsored by the FieroRacingList, and the reserved track is Arroyo Seco in New Mexico. See http://www.arroyosecoraceway.com/ or the FieroRacingList@yahoolists.com for further details.

I have visited and took a tour of the track (both clockwise and counter clockwise) at speed. After the first two corners, I made the comment that I felt that this might be the absolute safest track I had ever been on. There were virtually no elevation changes, yet it was technical and challenging. To quote the track brochure "The road course at Arroyo Seco is fun and challenging. There are 12 increasing, decreasing, and double apex turns and two straights to keep things interesting on the 1.4 mile track". A map of the track is at this URL: www.zianet.com/arroyoseco/

The plan is to run the track day clockwise on Saturday, Drag race (timed only, no brackets) on Saturday night, and run the road course counter-clockwise on Sunday. There will be a feast for a "banquet" somewhere during the course of the weekend featuring authentic Mexican cuisine.

Proposed costs for the entire weekend - - 2 full days of track, an evening of drag racing, and a banquet is $150 total. This is less than most single day track days, for comparison.

Stay tuned, more info to follow.

I may try to fly down for that event. If I do, I'm willing to pick up somebody enroute if they want a ride. This all depends on final preperations for the CFOG-i event shortly after, so I won't really know untill the last minute.

BTW, George, I noticed that the Demming airport is at 4, 353 ft asl.......does that have much effect on racing?

Hmmm.... 1600miles, 24 hours driving time (one-way), racing on a track just across the border from Mexico in the summer heat (it's a dry heat ). Sorry... that's a bit too much for me for this year - Enjoy the event though!

and did you read this above !!

"2 full days of track time, an evening of drag racing, and a banquet for $150 total"

That's a full race weekend for $150 American. By the time you figure out why you suck in turn 2 and 3 you'll be able to try it again.

Arroyo Seco - while not specifically a CFOGi event - has their support. The event isn't meant to be in conflict with Osage Beach, rather to augment it.The logistics just weren't there for them to have both a show and track day/drag racing this year, as in the past two years. However, an autocross is being planned at Osage Beach - so there WILL be a Performance Division presence there!

Anyway, the FieroRacingList is sponsoring the Performance weekend at Arroyo Seco so that those that enjoy an All-Fiero open track event and drag racing can have a place to do it again this year. We tried to set it up originally at Little Talledega, but there just wasn't enough interest to be able to pull it off. Arroyo Seco is a much less expensive track, so we can do our thing with a lot fewer participants than we could at any other track in the USA (at least that I am aware of).

Hey, don't take my response that way.

I was just trying to clarify what this event was really all about. There were a lot of people that thought there was a strained relationship with CFOGi simply because they had not scheduled a track day this year. When you mentioned Osage Beach, I took that opportunity to let them know that isn't the case. As a matter of fact, all the Officers and Directors I have spoken with are fully supportive, and most of them plan to be there!

I sincerely appreciate your support of this event. Thank you

G

Just to amplify further what George said in his post, there are absolutely NO bad feelings between CFOGi and George regarding this event, or anything else for that matter. George and I have talked about this for quite some time now and I've kept the rest of the officers and board members updated (at his request and with his full knowledge) on what's going on. I hope to be able to make it to the event and at least two other CFOGi directors or deputies are trying to make it on to their schedule as well.

This is a FUN event, folks, and we're all for having as much fun as we can with our cars be that at shows, autocross, track days, drags, or cruises. The logistics didn't work out this year for a track day. Hopefully we can have one again soon, but not at this year's national show. We are still working on having an autocross event at this year's show, but that's not certain at this point in time.

There's plenty of room under the tent for all of us, the last thing any of us wants is to be exclusionary.

One thing of interest - - although it appears to be desert, the Continental Divide is just a few miles west of Deming. There is a sign in the middle of the cacti that tells you so!

As with any internal combusion engine - yes, altitude has an effect. But you know, NHRA still has a couple National events at 7,000 feet near Denver. Annually, F1 has a street race on the streets of Denver (5,280' asl). There is an asphalt oval that is popular with Nascar trucks and the Busch series near Colo Springs (6,000') etc.

The faster cars are still faster than the slower cars, no matter the altitude!

I don't know what hwy 67 is like, but it's shorter by about 20 miles from the route you have, Don. Still over 500 miles for you, but you're hardy TX man, you can make that no sweat.

Just 2 from all of PFF?

I didn't expect but possibly a half dozen for the track day from this list (that's about all that is needed in addition to those on the RacingList to make it happen), but thought the drags would bring out all those in the Midwest, Southern Plains, and Southwest (and there are several - -) for a showdown!

I suspected that this "My car is faster than yours" mentality from the 1/4 mile guys on this forum was just mostly talking from the bottom end! Now I think this has shown that none of those "fast guys" really has the gonads to come out and prove it, they just want to talk about it - - -

I left a message for Brian Geyer, to see if he would be interested. It's only 1000 miles for us, so that's a bit shorter than our previous trips.

It is a little too far away for me to make it this year. The last two years were awesome though. $150 is a steal....... just too far away Mark

I talked to Brian Geyer today (one of the instructors at Waterford and Heartland Park), and he's up for it. We will probably trailer on of our cars there, and he will be available to instruct.

LOL.....you're correct George....I wanna see the fast guys come out and burn up some track. As for me, my 86 GT is stock, slow as hell, and I'm ready to prove it!! Count me in. Man, the Mexican banquet alone probably would have got me there. Plus I love any excuse to take the Fiero on a little road trip.

Cmon folks, I expect to see I-10 westbound full of Fieros coming through El Paso heading towards Arroyo Seco in July. Yeah, it's hot here, but it ain't that bad. The elevation around Deming cools it off a bit (just a bit).

Sounds like loads of fun. Any place to park my RV around there? It's only an hour and a half away, I may go scout it out in a couple of weekends.

Touchy throttle + posi rear end = Boomtastic squashes cones!

I wouldn't be able to navigate a course without bumping a few cones. There's too much torque. Besides, I'm not even going to BEGIN to pretend that my car was built for the twisties. It was built to burn rubber and be simply bad ass. Nothing less, nothing more.

There is lots of acreage to park an RV, and there is no charge. No electrical or water hookups, though. (I have a 7K Onan in my new trailer, and a portable 4K that I will have out there).

I will be staying in my slide-in that weekend myself!

There is a difference of almost $2500 PER DAY rental between the two. The entire weekend at Arroyo Seco (including the drag strip and banquet) is about half the rental of just than one day at Hallett.

To put it in perspective, I only need 20 entries to pay for the entire weekend at Arroyo Seco. OTOH, it would take 50 people - - each day - - at Hallett (100 paid entrants) to do the same thing. Plus, Hallet doesn't have the luxury of a drag strip they can throw in!

Actually, I was referring to all the ones making the noise about drag racing, but unwilling to come down and participate (FieroX - you out there?).

I will be starting a new thread about Arroyo Seco and draggin' a little later.

Anyway, if you can make it, drag Boomtastic then park it. I could let you take a few laps on the track in my car (again).

Hookups?? We don't need no stinking hookups

I'll just throw the 5K generator in the back of the truck, fill the fresh tanks on the fifth wheel, bring along an extra 40 gallons or so of H2O, and we'll be set. Will definitely need to be able to run the A/C in the camper though....so the gennie is a must.

Keep us posted on the progress George.....

OK, here it is.

I have paid for the track out of my own pocket. There have been too many problems associated with trying to get people to pre-register, etc. for past track days. If I lose money, it will be my loss. But by the same token, if it is profitable - -

Right now I have a total of 7 entries that have committed to the track day weekend. I need 20 to break even, but I am not too worried. As long as we keep this thread alive (and especially keep this weekend at the forefront on the FieroRacingList) I think more and more will commit to it.

However, with nobody showing an interest in the drag night, I may just cancel it. Then I could schedule Saturday night to put on the feed bag (authentic Mexican food), share some commadarie, and do some bench racing instead.

Anybody living within an 8 hr drive of that track would be a fool not to join you on this one George.

No way, I might like that (again)! LOL

Convincing arguement. I just liked the double digit miles west I would have to drive to get there. Call me bias but, well, I am
