Well we won the hard luck award at Carlisle. The pics say it all.
We did not think we were going to make it to the show. The wheel fell off about 2 hours into the trip. The studs broke off and the wheel past us on I-79 at 70 mph. A WV state trooper chased it down. The tire rolled about 2 miles before coming to a stop. The next exit was a dinky small town that had the worlds smallest Napa but they had studs so Matt fixed the wheel and we were back on the road within an hour. Glad we brought tools.

Good thing that trailer's double-axled... It's always fun to see your own wheel pass you on the highway, actually it's quite hilarious in retrospect. lol

Glad to see that the event on the road had a happy ending. My friend Jim who was living in Northern California in the 1980's frequently took his his collector Model T pickup for a ride and one day the clutch smoked and burned . He broke down in a small Napa Valley town. It just so happened that there was an small auto parts store in that town. He walked in and said do you have a clutch for a Model T Ford.??....and surprisingly thay had one!! He did the job on the street (those cars are very basic) and was on his way in a couple of hours.. The real moral of the story though is to be sure to always travel with a toolbox. Add a Fire extinguisher, booster cables, water, oil, ignition module, some hoses and belts and your chaces of making the destination really increase.

I'm just glad the Hard Luck award wasn't any "harder," if you know what I mean. I've seen others where the Fiero didn't survive. I'm glad it was something you could fix and get going again.

Holy crap. Maybe you ought to buy that deputy a beer. Cripes!
Ed
just so you know, the officer wasnt on foot
we just pulled over onto the shoulder and kinda coasted watching the wheel roll, the trailer still towed fine with one wheel on one side, but when we got to the little town 5 miles up the road, the wheel on the side by itself was warmer than the other two. my father says that if it had been the back wheel, the rear axle would have been dragging the ground.
either way its always bad when the wheel pass's you, im just for the most part glad that i saw it in the rear view, cause as far as towing goes, there wasnt much change in the way the trailer was towing when the wheel fell off.
we count ourselves lucky.
matthew
ps. dont stay at the howard johnson in carlisle its a crappy hotel at good hotel price.

The double axle trailers are pretty stable on three wheels. As long as you can get the rig slowed down and onto the shoulder you will be okay.
I had a tire blow out on my trailer on the way to Daytona this year. I replaced it pretty easily with my spare, but then went on a treasure hunt looking for a replacement for my spare. I didn't even think to qualify for the hard luck award.

Hey Matt Nice Job! I'm glad that everyone was ok! What caused that? Are the studs long enough for thoses rims? Next time you'll just have to take two Fieros. I bet that was the time when I tried calling you and didn't get an answer. Matt J

It ain't too damned funny if its the front tire on the vehicle your driving! Been there done that and it ain't funny. Believe me. Make you want to check your nuts. According to my brother it ain't too funny when your loaded in a pick up truck and your back tire decides to out run you too.

It was nice to meet you's at the show and with your new daughter too! Hope she didn't get bothered by all the sun.
Becky
Elizabeth was not bothered by the sun at all I think its her darker skin she has like her daddy. I was concerned after I heard your story but she did not get burned at all thannks for asking.

Just an observation - This is the second year in a row that the "Hard Luck Award" has been won by someone named MATT. Last year it was won by Matt Dorniack (sp?) for driving from central Long Island to Carlisle the week before the Carlisle show. So- next year, if your name is Matt, just change it to something else for the Carlisle weekend, unless you want the "Hard Luck Award".

Actually Matt Dorniak won the Horse's Tail Award last year - basically the award for having done something idiotic or some whacko occurence that happened en route. I'm trying to remember who won hard luck last year....
But anyways, I'm glad you guys made it okay! We enjoyed seeing you!
