Welcome to the Forum, Marty... Not all of us have Fiero's, By The Way (BTW)... Some of us have the Fiero Support Vehicles to come along to the shows!
Anywayz, our definate plans now, are that we will be leaving the Long Beach Airport area around 3:00 AM (yes, before the sun comes up) on Friday, so if anyone wants to tag along, they are more than welcome! I believe we have 1 other person tagging along with us so far.. Is he stupidly crazy at 3am!?

A good place is Auburn. I think it's the Foresthill exit. Go over the freeway to the Beacon Station on the right. $2.27 for regular, lowest price I saw. That way, you have a full tank for any driving around Truckee. FORGET getting gas up here. I didn't catch any prices, but it's normally close to $3/gallon.
Maybe I'll stop twice on the way then. I just ran off the detail maps for the trip and it's 145 miles from my house to the fuel stop in Sacramento. I don't know if I want to press my luck that far....
I'm thinking that I could fill up at the lunch stop in Pinole (that's about 80 miles from here) and then again in Auburn (or close to there). That'd keep a comfortable amount in the tank at all times and get me into Truckee with almost a full tank.

Whuffo/Michael.....Im hoping I can still go to Westfest but I will not know for sure this until this evening. If I can make it, would it be OK to tag along behind you and Deb? In that case I could simply meet you in front of your house friday morning and caravan with you. (to the other caravan) If that sounds good, let me know what time I should be there.
I'll call you tonight before 8:30 to let you know if I'm going or not.
Thanks, Kit (86 GT)

Sounds good. It's not that far between Madison Ave. and Auburn, but a little ways to Truckee and back to Auburn from there including a full lake loop. I don't remember if we more or less ended our drive at the view point last time and exactly where it's at or if the group went back to Truckee the same way from there and then took off or kept driving the full way around the loop . Some of us took off through South Lake, filled up there, and came back down 50, which would be a shorter return from there and then take 680 south at Cordelia rather than come back down 80. I'm not sure what time we'll hit back in the Bay Area and if there are any ball games, but there's the NASCAR at Infineon and a race at Altamont too, so 680 would avoid any of those possible traffic hose-ups. There's another Arco at Dixon that I'm familiar with (Pitt School I think--the first one of three heading east and the third of the three coming west).
So who's planning to stop at my house in Fremont and then caravan up to Pinole from there so we make sure we have everybody before we take off? Mike and Deb? Todd? Brian? Karl and Kristine for sure. Maybe Kit? Maybe Gecko? My cell phone no. is (510) 673-4068 and we'll have the 2-ways on Ch. 7 per usual.
One day left!!! Wahoooo!

Oops! Sorry if my odd sense of humor mislead you. By “trade-in” I simply meant that I’d switch to the Fiero then hit the road. Since you guys are getting such an early start you’ll be blowing past here way too early for me to hook up with you. It’s probably just as well since I’d like to take advantage of this opportunity to check my mileage. I made this same run back in 96 in my previous Fiero GT and got stellar mileage. 34.2 in one direction and 32 point something in the other direction. I’m sure the 55-mi/hr speed limit helped a lot. I filled the tank and went straight for the freeway, got into 5th, and set the cruise as soon as I got it up to the limit. It was a painfully slow trek for me and my passenger, but it was a good experiment. I wonder what my current GT will get at 65?
Oh, and thanks for the welcome!
See you all there! Marty

foolishmouse and Fierosis left the beach around 8 or so this morning, so if they're not there yet, they should be there within an hour or so (unless they made some stops).

Posting from the motel in Truckee - they've got wireless internet here. We're having a great time already and the weekend is just starting. I'm hoping that more people will arrive tomorrow...
If you didn't come this year you're missing out.

To probably wrap up this thread, indeed a grand time was had by all!! More people did show up Sat. a.m. as expected and in fact at least doubled our number on Friday. Fierobear will have the facts and figures, but we did miss those who couldn't make it. The weather info showed thunderstorms all three days, but skies were sparsely clouded at most, nights a little crisp at altitude, and each day was gorgeous! Friday night socializing and tech session was great, awards banquet Sat. the usual fun, and all were aided and abetted with the famous and plentiful margaritas--thanks WCF!! We were on the road to the Lake Tahoe vista point, lined up for a left turn I believe, when the earthquake hit and only Larry felt it. It may have been the margaritas! It was a picture-perfect view today and I know there will be some great pictures.
Out of our caravan group to the event on Friday, Brian left early Sat. a.m. to instuct at Thunderhill Sat. & Sun., so we hope he made it all right. Toddster gave a great tech presentation, had lots of cool stuff to display Sat., then took off after the show and we hope he made it back okay. Harry left early this morning and made it back to S.F. just fine around noon. Silvermist and the Mrs. and Whuffo and the Mrs. were visiting in various locals on the way home and we hope they each had a great day. The Toys, Henry and son Tim and their wives who joined us at Pinole on the way up, Kitskaboodle, Gecko and son, the Melzners, and myself caravaned back to the Bay Area after the drive and a nice lunch with Fiero friends at Crystal Bay. We gassed up in Truckee, had a nice drive over the hill, gassed up again and shook everything out at Dixon, then took the 680 south cut off of 880 at Cordelia to avoid some major traffic tie-ups that would be inevitible on other routes. Other than some bumper-to-bumper through Roseville for some reason, it was pretty smooth sailing the rest of the way. The Toys, Kitskaboodle, and Gecko took the 580 west at Dublin to 880 south to the San Mateo Bridge to hit the Peninsula and we hope they all had a successful trip to their destinations. The Melzners and I got off at Sunol and took NIles Canyon back into Fremont and concluded the weekend with some Thai food. Perfect!
Thanks to everyone who worked so hard and participated to make it a wonderful event and I hope to see you all again soon! Happy Fieroing!!

You did a great job on the caravan and we all owe you a big debt of gratitude. Julie and I left after the awards (well, actually, after dessert) with the trophies in her SUV because I was not sure they would fit in my GT! I had to be on a 6:10 am flight Sunday morning out of SFO, so we made a midnight run of sorts home to the Bay.
I had a great time at the show and especially with the members of Golden Gate Fieros -- what a fun and nice group of people.

IMFIERO, congrats on all the trophies! It was good to meet you. You know, your going to have to build an extra shelf in your house to display all those trophies. Oh, and dont forget....Fiero's are your destiny.
Jeannie....thanks for guiding us home!
By the way, did you know my car never made it home? It's stuck in the parking garage at Kaiser/Redwood City. The alternator light came on just as I pulled into the parking garage. Turns out my alternator is hanging on the car by one bolt! (Lost bottom bolt somewhere on 101/Whipple) I am going back late this morning to jury rig it so I can get it home.....

Kit, the alt only hangs by one bolt. There is a set screw underneath that keeps tension on the belt but that is the only other fastener. Is that missing? It is a 13mm, 1 inch long bolt. Fairly common.
How did Harry do getting home? Did he find some bolts to hold his rear tranny mount to the block? If I were Harry I'd go postal on the dumb**** mechanic who let him leave his shop like that. He will need one new axle now...at least!

Hey all.. It was as always, a great time! and I see just how much my presence with bringing the marg machine, and towing vehicles there, means to everyone, since I COULDN'T EVEN GET ANYONE TO BRING ME A DAMN BEER IN JAIL, LET ALONE GET MORE THAN $18 FOR BAIL! SHEESH!
For those that cruised with us to Nevada on Saturday nite, that was kewl! Some people came back with extra money from the casino, and some people came back with a beautiful view in mind! That moon was cool!
How was the run on Sunday? Did Paul every make it somewhere okay!? When you guys called John, we were already about 15 miles from you guys on the 80 when you called.
And also, next time, DO NOT LET THE GUYS FROM ARIZONA BRING THE R.V. TO ANOTHER CAR SHOW. THE LAST THING SOME OF US WANT, IS TO HEAR AT 10:00 IN THE MORNING, "KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK - HELLO, NEVADA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT. OPEN UP FOR AN INSPECTION OF YOUR VEHICLE!" Some of us might actually have something in our vehicle that we don't want found! Like the beer bottles that we forgot to throw away last nite!

When most people don't even know what a Fiero is, let alone just where the motor is, you seem to somehow fit right in. You see the looks people give to that car with the PIAA light conversion, the 2" drop springs, big scoops on the hood, and the 19" tires that are bigger than the car itself, and get a kick out of their reactions. You get all warm and gooshy inside by knowing you help out children in need by putting smiles on their faces, whenever you drive by with that car on the trailer all lit up with neon. A car that isn't made anymore, is kept alive by being the prize posession of most of their owners who spend 5 times more than what they paid for them to gain a few more horsepower, and loose a couple seconds off their 1/4 mile, and spend many of nights sleeping "in the dog house" because of it. You help them save their paychecks on tow bills by being the "Fieros West & WCF Support Vehicle". So crack open a drink, Fiero Tower Guy, and know that the Fiero community appreciates your participation & support. If it wasn't for you, we wouldn't be able to show Corvettes and Porches just how Mean the "M" in 2M6 can get!

The run went fine, except for Paul's trouble. He had a coolant leak that we couldn't isolate or repair. He didn't need to go back home immediately, so he followed Kym to Reno, where she was going to set him up with her mechanic (for today, I assume).

Well, Paul wasn’t the onliest one to have trouble on the way out. I’m still trying to decide if I was unlucky or actually quite lucky. On the way to the Inn Friday night I noticed as I got almost there that my clutch pedal was getting a bit mushy. But I was still able to change gears just fine so I just chalked it up to the altitude and a tired left leg. Then on Sunday as I was pulling out of my parking space two funny things happened. The first was that some joker that may have been pulling my leg asked if my car was a Ferrari. Lol! The second was that my clutch’s contact point had clearly moved from its normal top of the pedal travel to just off of the carpet. If common sense had ruled I’d have stopped right there and investigated, but oh no, I just had to continue on. Well, I didn’t get far before it was almost impossible to shift gears. By this time I was on the freeway and realizing that I wasn’t going to make it home without fixing something. So, I pulled off at the first exit thinking that it was the one that I remembered as having a 76 station. Not even close, that one was two more exits down. So I got as far as the stop sign at the bottom of the ramp and that was it. It wouldn’t shift into any gear. I put on the parking brake and the flashers and got out. I no sooner than got the front hood open and the cap off of the clutch master cylinder when the local constabulary pulled up behind me. I just got to peer into the reservoir long enough to find a small puddle of what looked like chocolate moose where the hydraulic fluid was supposed to be when a really nice guy by the name of Brenton Schneider stepped out and greeted me. This guy’s timing was only exceeded buy his helpfulness. He pushed me off of the road by hand and then gave me a lift to the local NAPA auto parts store that was literally just around the corner. And it was actually open on Sunday! After returning me to my car with brake fluid in hand, he stuck around while I removed the Moose and replaced it with the new fluid. A few dozen pumps of the pedal later and I had clutch control again! After I thanked him profusely he gave me his card and told me to call if I had any further trouble. The rest of the trip home was nearly perfect except for the need to pump the clutch back up from time to time. It would seem that I now have a trapped air bubble to bleed out. Anyhow, I had the T-Tops off and my bald-head thoroughly greased with SPF 45 so I wouldn’t need to wear a hat. The sky and the temperature were just right for the nearly three hour cruise home. All in all, a pretty cool weekend!

Dang, Marty, glad you were still in the area as opposed to farther away from help and the Fiero gods were with you too when Mr. Schnieider came along. So glad to know you got it fixed and made it home alright. Hopefully you can caravan with us next time!
