Could someone post a picture of a manuel VW trans? The kind that comes in a Ist generation bug? Also, How much power can one handle and did they ever come in a 5 speed?

Thanks Vinny

Hey Vinny,

You can convert the 4 sp VW transaxle to a 5 speed, Gene Berg has the convertion kit for it http://www.geneberg.com/.

But If you really want to go crazy with HP and 5 speed, try one of the mendeola racing transaxles http://www.mendeolaracing.com/, this guys are crazy, they have 4 and 5 sp transaxles that can handle up to 1300 to 1600 HP, 800 to 1100 lbs. ft. torque, and they can be ordered with a Chevy V8 bell housing-LS1, LS6, GEN 2SB, they are a little expensive .

Greetings ...
Ales

Thanks Ales! I'm accually thinking on the very cheap side of the spectrum. Wouldn't it be neat if you could , and you have to imagine very hard, take a Fiero and stretch it, widen the rear quarters to really hold some tires (335s or so) invert a VW 4-speed or 914 5-speed with a 3.4 DOHC of about 250 or so HP (no to much so as not to kill your trans) Pretty much gut it of everything you can live without paint it flat black with a roll cage but still street legal. Now that sounds like a sports car to me. I donno, maybe its just me. But if anyone trys this the copy write is mine!

That's a great company! They've been helping people mount odd engines to the VW transaxle for years now.

Here's a pic I found of a VW dune buggy with a 13B rotory engine attached.

You can't really see the adapter, but I'm sure it's a Kennedy adapter.

the cost of the 5spd conversion (1300) is higher than what it costs for a good used 914 transaxle about 300 dollars
