I finally made it back home this morning.
Jane left Ruckus in her Fiero Sunday afternoon, going south to San Antonio to visit a friend, then on back to San Angelo that evening-no problems.
I left at the same time and went East to my father's place for a week of chainsaws, removing fallen trees, rebuilding fences, and MREs. Consequences of hurricane Rita. We had electricty thanks to crews from as far away as Kansas, but the grocery stores haven't restocked their perishables yet since some of the powerline repairs are temporary and short lived outages occured several times while I was there.
Left last night around 9pm and pulled into my parking spot this morning at 4:30, after a flawless 400+ mile return trip. Full moon, on a clear October night, so I stowed the sunroof up front, and turned the heater on low. Moon out my window and constellation Orion overhead, made for a great drive home after a really hard week's 'vacation'.
I left my father's with a full tank of gas, planning on filling up just west of Austin, near Spicewood, but was surprised to find that station closed. Had 1/4 tank, and contemplated backtracking to Austin but decided to try for Llana, 62 miles away. I had never let it get below 1/4 tank before, so wasn't sure how accurate it was. Made it to Llano by driving no faster than 60 mph, keeping the rpm around 2500, and the pump turned off at 7.4 gallons with 249 miles showing on the tripmeter. Evidently the gas gage is not accurate, but errs with a few gallons left when the gage shows empty. Not bad at all considering the 1st 50 miles was stop & go traffic getting thru Conroe and all the little towns with their football game crowds. Nearly 34 mpg. The 84 ran perfectly the entire trip. Nearly 1000 miles in total, including all the running around I did in East Texas. Adding Jane's mileage on her 84, we drove over 1500 trouble free miles. Not bad for two 20 yr old cars, both daily drivers.
A good show this year-as always--with a good turnout. Thanks Heidi, Ken, Blake, and that other person-forget his name right now.
