It does make sense, I can see why ferrari then puts stripes on thier challange stradale series and has stripes on the FFX, they are all race programs, so the can train the drivers, since the buyers may be novices in their new cars

No Gordo, but I found excerpts on a site that was probably copied in turn from that one. It's only a ripoff of a ripoff
I didn't really get the orientation thing either, but I'm pretty sure there's something to it. Ever been spun around a few times or flung around in your seat as you lose/gain traction in a slide? If you're not in control of how your body is in the seat, it actually can be difficult to judge the exact direction your car is pointing, and I'm pretty sure that can make a difference in a high speed race. If your line is off by just a few degrees, I guess that could translate to a foot or three too far in/out on a turn and ending up in worse trouble like going off the track...?
It seems to me the stripes would be more for people outside the car. If there was a spin-out with lots of dust and smoke and comotion you might only be able to see a portion of the car in trouble or you might not have time to study it and see what its orientation is. With the stripes on there it might be a little easier to get a sense of which direction this car is going to move at.

Thankfully, I can't speak from experience but.... I would think that it is easier to fix on your hood (cause you're spinning with it) than it is to fix on the world around you. Even though I found the same explanation elsewhere on the internet, it doesn't sound logical to me. Count me in as still skeptical.
i always thought that stripes were used to help identify the driver of the car. So that you knew the car with 2 big stripes was joe, the one with an off centered small stripe was dave, and the one with 2 little slashes was bob.
I, also, remember someone saying that stripes on cars were used to create a more intimidating look, because we naturally make stripes=danger, such as found on snakes, skunks, leopards, etc...
I'm thinking that there are many reasons for putting stripes on a car, and I think that sports cars look great with stripes!
Many different cars take "styling cues" directly from cars that are only on the race track. By your argument, all of us with spoilers on our Fieros too, are also "noobs" and "idiots". And these styling cues are sometimes just that. Style.. and not functional.
To each his own is always my opinion when it comes to cars. If somebody likes something else enough to put it on their car-- even if I don't like it -- so be it, it's not my car.
